I have read some of the old threads which have a lot of very helpful info.
dh- has 5.7 cholesterol butother than that is slim, fit and eats like a horse.
We are in Australia at the moment- would a Uk doctor advise changing diet or tablets?

5.7 isn't very high - the ideal is below 5 - so could probably be treated easily enough by diet.

Some more info here

It would depend on other factors such as age, family history, any heart problems, blood pressure problems (hypertension) or diabetes.

A healthy diet to lower cholesterol should be recommended for all!

Thanks wigWam bam- his diet is pretty good, apart from a slight over indulgence in biscuits which he is working on. The main problem is he is SO hungry all the time. Doctors have advised tablets which seems a shame.

aged 47; father died from a heart attack although hs cholesterol was normal.

It's a tricky one because cholesterol tablets have been shown to be extremely safe and also effective. We also know that lowering cholesterol will probably reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

I'm only 33 but diabetic and as soon as I stop breastfeeding I'm going to start cholesterol tablets so I'm doing all I can.

However I think it's a shame when people take the tablets rather than consider a change in their lifestyle.

They don't have to be low fat unless he is trying to lose weight. You just need to cut out saturated fats - ie. butter, animal fats - and replace them with things like veg/sunflower/olive oil. Not very good with recipes so can't make suggestions
