Hi Ghosty - you know a bit about supplements don't you?

There was a thread yesterday about migraines and I mentioned that I had been advised to take 500mg of magnesium as it can really help with both recurring headaches and migraines. A MNer was wondering if she could give to an 11 yr old. Am sure answer is yes but poss not at 500 mg? Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Budababe

I will have a look at the amount in our supps ... Not strictly allowed to advise can only tell you what our products provide - and the reputation of the company is so good that they won't risk putting the wrong amounts in ... iyswim?
I'll get back to you

Thanks hon.

Seems like such a simple way to possible help migraine sufferers - hopefully it will work.

Hi Budababe ...
Like I said, I can's advise but I did a little bit of research for you ...
I found (well my colleague did) this website which looks great. It has some info about magnesium and migraines.
Also, Patrick Holford's New Optimum Nutrition Bible (google it, you may get it from amazon) has some really interesting information about children and supplements, regarding amounts. According to him 110mg of magnesium a day is ideal for 9-11 year olds.
That fits in well with our products as our children's supplement and our product for teenagers contain around that much in a day's dose too.

Talking to my colleague today we discussed that the amounts for optimum health may be different to the amounts needed for something specific. Within my every day supplement program I take 500mg of magnesium a day but I also take a calcium/magnesium supplement on top of that and that takes my total to 1000mg a day which is perfectly safe. (I used to suffer from debilitating headaches and since going on a good program they are few and far between now) ...
There can be some side effects of taking too much magnesium (for example, taking too much can make your bowel become rather active) but really your friend should check with a doctor about what is safe for her son.
Remember, the main thing with choosing supplements is to find a good brand that is manufactured and tested to pharmaceutical standard (British GMP standard) so that way you know what is on the label is in the pot ...

Thank you so much for the information, I am going to get some magnesium today. I am still not 100% happy with her taking the Pizotifen as I am aware that there may be an issue with weight gain.
