DS (20mo) lumps at base of neck... any ideas?

Whenever ds gets agitated or screams (frequently enough to send a sane person mad), we have noticed that he has a particularly prominent vein which looks lumpy towards the base of his neck/collar bone... Normal?? Not normal??

Anyone? Went to the doctor and she agreed the vein was more prominent than on the other side and is sending us to a pediatrician... I'm sure (hope) this is "just in case" but would be interested to know if anyone else has experience...?

sorry, don't know what this could be but wanted to say I know how you feel, it is sooooo worrying. Ds had lumps in his neck recently which was possible lymphoma but ended up being an infection. I found the NHS care for little ones to be really good and really quick so I'm sure they'll be able to tell you what it is really soon.

DD has a little pea sized lump 'in/overlaid with one of her veins which sometimes appears to be quite prominent. I n fact I think all of my 3 have it.

I have never worried about it - but now you are worrying me...

peachypie · 26/08/2007 23:04

My DS ahe 6 has had a lump in his neck since he was about 1.5. Was very worried when first noticed it. took him to Gp and they said it was an enlarged lymph node. Was refered to a consultant who said the same and they wouldnt investigate it ie; biopsy, unless it grew rapidly or he began to lose weight or became lethargic.

I have noticed over the last few years that if he is ill, has a cold or is coming down with something it gets bigger! then goes down when he gets better. I did a little research and apparently the lymph nodes filter out infection and swell. so this makes sense. I do still worry about it though. The fact that he is full of energy and doesnt stop eating easies my worry.

I know this isnt advice or anything but hope it helps to put your mind at rest.

hi peachypie, my son has the same, only he has a few, hes had them since he was about 4, hes now 8, i notice aswell like u that they come up and down with infection or colds etc

Thank you so much, MN people (I knew it was worth persevering).

Sorry SMS I didn't mean to worry you - I'll let you know how this turns out. Dh spotted it mid-July and the doctor didn't seem overly concerned but then has referred us to the paed who has already requested a chest x-ray to check there a no blockages. We took ds for the x-ray last week (which he was not too happy about I can tell you!) Dh thinks there are more lumps now and perhaps some on the left side too. Plus ds does touch his neck sometimes when bf-ing with me or having a cuddle with dad... You only really see them when he is crying or bellowing (!) but it is a worry.

Shopping - were the lumps in your ds's neck in his veins? GP did mention something about valves but I can't remember exactly what she said - was having an educated guess and not committing herself.

Peachy - just one lump? Ds has a sort of cluster. He is also active, chatty and a good eater. No other signs of illness.

Loopy - are your kids fair? HV said she has seen prominent veins before and tends to be in fair children. DS is blonde with light skin tone.

Thanks again x

ds' lumps were lymph nodes which were golf ball size (overnight!) and ended up being abcesses. Doesn't sound like your ds has the same but just wanted to reassure you about the treatment you should get.

Walnutshell · 27/08/2007 21:57

Thanks Shop x. However, 2 months from GP referral to paed appointment not very impressive. Might be area we now live in as compared to a slight "scare" I had a few years ago, this is extremely slow. Hmm.

Gosh I didn't realise it had been that slow. Perhaps we were lucky where we live or perhaps it was because they thought it was lymphoma that they were so quick off the mark. It was 3 weeks from the lumps appearing to ds' first lot of surgery. How old is your ds?

Walnutshell · 21/09/2007 19:35

Sorry Shop, must've missed your reply somehow. In the unlikely event of you returning - ds is 23 months old. He is due to see the Paed next week. I am getting anxious - everytime dh looks at him he thinks the lump is more prominent. It is only evident when he squwarks or strains somehow. He touches towards the back of his neck a lot esp when breastfeeding. Oh I don't know, it's all such a worry.

My friends son has a lump thing on the back of his neck which inflate and deflates. They have had it checked out because they thought it was something nasty but its nothing to worry about apparently. Sounds similar sort of like a prominent vein.

Walnutshell · 23/09/2007 21:39

Thank you! His health is otherwise good so hoping that it is nothing.

My dh has this- the only side effect seems to be that when he laughs really hard, his hands go numb- linked to the blood flow. He's never had any other problems.
