I have been getting terrible migraines lately, at least twice a week. I have been on triptan tablets for a while. The 100mg ones (standard dose is 50mg) The icing on the cake was on saturday night when I had a very bad attack I was screaming in agony. I took 2 of the migraine tablets 3 hours apart and still nothing so I took some paracetamol after and just ended up passing out with the pain. I had a christening to go to on the sunday as well so I was in a right state. It really is getting too much now. I am having to rely on DH taking the kids to school when I am having an attack and someone else to pick them up. Its so debilitating. I am scared to death they are going to say I have something more sinister than just migraines. The pain just never seems to go away no matter what I do. My head constantly throbs and eventually, escalates into a full blown migraine. I have tried a change in diet, had my eyes tested, wear my glasses when I need them. Nothing seems to help. What else can the doctor possibly do though?? I keep having nightmares about having something more serious wrong with me.

I have suffered for years with migraine and have only ever found that syndol take sthe edge off it and I have to sleep it off.The tingling and numbness can come with sever migraine so don't worry about other causes yet HTH

Wisteria · 18/07/2007 10:21

The hardest thing I find is doing the exercises at the right time! By the time I think about it I've gone too far down the pain path!

bundle · 18/07/2007 10:26

anangelwithin, I'm glad you're gettting some help. a neuro surgeon i spoke to a while ago said that other symptoms (ie not pain) are much stronger indicators of something sinister, so please try not to worry

Hi Angel,

I've had migraines on and off since I was a child, so I know how horrible they can be. They seem to run in my family... a cousin of mine was rushed into hospital with a suspected stroke once, and it turned out to be a severe migraine.

I just wanted to say that you aren't alone with your numbness etc. One side of my face drops, my speech becomes very slurred, and one side of my body goes weak/numb. I've never worked out all of my triggers, but I know that changes in the weather play a big part in them for me. Like you, I can have several migraines in a week.

I was told that these symptoms can be part of migraine, which is no consolation at all really. I hope that you get somewhere at the hospital. Please can you let us know what they say?

bundle · 19/07/2007 12:12

I would try keeping a diary - menstrual cycle, diet, sleep, when you take meds and what happens etc which might help the consultant to unpick what's going on.

have they mentioned the possibility of a patent foramen ovale in your heart? (a wee hole)Can be diagnosed quickly by an echo scan (like pregnancy scans). There was a paper in the NEJM a couple of years back looking at the correlation between this and severe migraines.

OrmIrian · 30/07/2007 14:59

Good luck angel.

I used to get what I thought were migraines. They were agonising - I'd pass out with pain, scream and generally have a horrible time. I discovered that the trigger wasn't food or anything like that, it was simply tension being relayed from my back. I took up yoga and I visit the chiropractor when things start to get bad and I've not had anything like as many or as bad since.

AnAngelWithin · 30/07/2007 20:55

well i went and he did all sorts of poking and prodding. he rang the neurosurgeon who recommended changing to a new tablet (a triptan) which he is writing to my gp about. I also had to go for heart trace (eeg??) and had 5 vials of blood taken. He has recommended i have an MRI and see the neurologist which i will get an appointment for through in the next week or so. he also said i can up m pizotifen if need be.

Sounds like you're making some progress, AAW. I hope the change in medication helps.
