Just been diagnosed with a blood clot and I'm freaking out.

Just diagnosed this evening after intensely bad pain in my calf over the last 36 hours. I'm actually wondering though if I've had it since last summer as have had a dull ache in my calf since then which I've mentioned to several doctors who just said it was connected to my ankle tendon problem. Which never seemed right as it was so high up, I remember joking to someone last July that I thought I had a dvt.

Anyway, I am properly freaking out tonight. I can't stop crying and am scared to go to sleep,

I've had a dose of blood thinner injection. I have to ring up the hospital on tues to see if they can fit me in for a scan to see the extent of the clot.

The doctor said something about me being in a half injection dose now and that they will double the dose after my scan.

I've just read the injections don't disolve the clot but stop it spreading. But that it takes a few days of injections for the stopping spreading level to be reached. So I'm scared it might break away any second. And I could drop down dead any second.

They've given me no advice about activity. Do I try and stay active or not at the minute? Could activity dislodge it.?

Google says a clot can take months to disolve. I'm flying long haul in July. Dr said I could still do this. But I will still have a clot? Is this safe?

Ok. Breathe.

You're looking at the worst case scenario. A DVT is super common and most of them have no ill effects. There's no reason not to continue your usual activity and flying won't affect it. The reason they talk about flights is that it can heighten the risk of developing a DVT.

The chances of you dropping dead are teeny tiny. Honest.

Oh. And stop Googling!!! No good will come of that!

Thank you.

Got about 3 hours sleep last night. Have woken up this morning and I'm still in agony with my calf. It's like I've constantly got the worst cramp there, am struggling to walk.

Does anyone know if this pain will stay until the clot goes? Because that could be months couldn't it?

Go back if you are worried - what have they put on instead of the cast? Maybe the leg hurts as the break is not as supported now - are you in an air cast or had the break healed so they kept it off?

I was on clexane injections for a suspected clot & i has to have them twice a day. Now I am on them just once a day as preventative dose.

I was advised to go back if it got worse (mine wasn’t DVT but only infected phlebitis, I’ve had it a few times and it clears up with antibiotics after 10 days or so - is yours definitely DVT?)
Don’t spend all day worrying. Have you got a walk-in clinic nearby? If not, call 111 for advice/reassurance.

Cast was for a chronic stress fracture which I've had for a year. The pain isn't from that, it's much higher up.

Have just been to a&e now as no chemist has my dose of clexane in stock. They actually rang me as I was in the waiting room saying I need to come back this afternoon for a scan.

Hope it’s all sorted Nico and you’ve stopped worrying and have the right treatment plan in place.

I've been back for a scan and they can't find a clot. Apparantly the blood test they did last night can have false positives. Would have been nice if they'd mentioned that and I wouldn't have spent hours crying thinking it might kill me any second!

Leg still hurts. Dh reckons I've got bad cramp! 😁🙈

I've survived two-one in my left subclavian vein and one in my left knee-was terrifying as I'm a nurse and being on blood thinners scared the hell out of me. But I survived and so will you! Best wishes!
