Has anyone ever been prescribed anti-biotics for (fungal) nappy rash?

DD has severe Nappy rash and I went to the doctors on Friday to try a different cream. He prescribed me some cream which seems (at last) to have done the trick. He said the infection was fungal and could be internal as well as on her bum. Anyway he also prescribed some "Syrup". I was in a rush so didn't notice until I got home that the syrup was actually Floxapen (anti-biotic). If I had known what it was I would have asked him but I didn't get chance. I haven't given her any yet and the rash itself is going but I was wondering if anyone else had ever had this? If not, I will speak to pharmacist tomorrow but I want to know a bit more before I give her it.

hmm, the anti-fungal may cause a bacterial problem?? Not sure, why not double check with the doc or the pharmacist?

My doc said the best cure for DS's nappy rash was metanium ointment and use a hairdryer on a cool setting to dry his bum - it cleared in a week. (It was infected - red angry wealds and vvv sore)

Thanks, tried metanium (although didn't try the hairdryer, lol) and the only thing that has worked is the Timodene cream he gave me. She has had it on and off for months.

Re the antibiotics, I thought it was odd as nappy rash can be a side effect of taking anti-biotics. My Dr is away for 3 weeks but I think I will check with the pharmacist before I give her any.

could the fungal nappy rash be infected?

hairycaterpillar · 15/07/2007 19:34

Floxapen is commonly given for staphylococccal skin infections like impetigo...it would do nothing for a fungal infection. Maybe your Dr thought that the rash was fungal but with a bacterial/staph element...therefore prescribed the floxapen. Timodene is a antifungal and mild steroid.

It could be, she has been scratching it a lot (gave had to put socks on her hands every time I take her nappy off) but it does seem a lot better today. So annoyed the doc just told me he was giving me some "syrup"!
