Its on his ribs and has been there since he was about 8 weeks old. I thought it was bruising from birth and was concerned that it never really faded - so mentioned it at clinic today.

The Nurse asked if his dad was bi-racial as its more common in mixed race children, but we are both white (and neither of us have any biracial family members) so its rare apparently.

Id never even heard of it!!

I know someone who has one, all his family white but he was told prob someone way back in family tree with african descent

edam · 14/07/2007 18:09

Had heard of them but never in a child with no ethnic minority background. Nice to have something so distinctive, in a way.

Apparently if you go back far enough, most families will find at least one Black ancestor. You'll have to research your family tree now to see if you can find him or her.

Don't want to worry you, but I've seen some parents complain that HVs and other health/ss professionals don't know about Mongolian blue spots and get concerned about bruising. So worth ensuring it is noted on his medical records, at the docs but also in the Red Book.

DS2 and DD had them, DDis 3.5 and you can still see hers faintly (it's on her tail bone) Ds2s ones have completely gone. It's common in children with 'olivey' skin, so that can be mixed race, asian, mediterranian etc. I'm english, but quite dark and Dh is Cypriot so it was pretty certain DCs were going to have them. They do look like bruises, so it's a good idea to get your m/w or gp to write it into your red book. There's been quite a few of us on here (myself included) who have undergone interrogation in A&E by nurses/doctors who aren't familar with them, who are alarmed by them because they look so bruiselike. As I said I've had it happen to me, and I live in south London where they should be used to it!

kiskidee · 14/07/2007 18:13

Dh is white for all intents and purposes but had one. His mum though is 1/4 Greek 1/4 Italian 1/2 English.

In a part of France where the Huns invaded and settled a short while up to 20% of French babies have it. Can't quite remember the region.

charmkin · 14/07/2007 18:13

yup
my ds got one
get it on his record and mention it at every examination of him before his clothes come off

kiskidee · 14/07/2007 18:14

Anyone with American Indian, Mediterranean, Far Eastern heritage is likely to have one.

MadEyeMisdee · 14/07/2007 18:25

dd3 has one.

i am white, dh is whiter than white and a redhead freckly person.

but my mums side of the family are descendants of romany gypsy.

hifi · 14/07/2007 19:29

its just like a birth mark,my daughter has a huge one on her bottom.

Pabamella · 14/07/2007 20:32

Thanks for that,

TBH the reason I hadnt mentioned it befre is because i was scared it was a bruise (from one of the normal everyday bumps, falls ect) and that someone would be concerned he was being hurt. But the nurses today were really nice and i suppose Im lucky that they knew what it was.

Im of scottish decent and DP is of Irish decent, so not much ethnicity there,- im sure my granny mentioned some 'romany' background though.

I am white but olive skinned, as is the DS with the Blue spot.

It does look very much like a bruise though and Im definatly going to get it recorded in his red book.

Hes actully a very special child I think! He was born on his EDD, he was born in a birth pool and was born in his caul (still in the sac) and had to be 'cut out' of it,

then this!

Do they fade? Or stay the same?

Ive seen some pics of them today and some are very blue and noticable - can they darken?

Thanks x

dd3 one is less blue now, and more bruise like. she is 2.5yrs old.

potoroo · 14/07/2007 21:02

DS has one (mixed Chinese) on his tailbone but it is very faint.
I have another friend whose LO has a very large one on his bottom.

Do get it put in the notes to avoid unnecessary questioning

meemar · 14/07/2007 21:05

DS1 is almost 4 and his has disappeared.

Pabamella · 15/07/2007 10:33

Good to know they fade then.

oooh, born in his caul. very lucky, my grandma used to say.

MarsLady · 15/07/2007 10:37

Make sure it's noted in your red book so that you don't get any accusations thrown at you.

There have been lots of threads about MBS. It should be gone by the time he's 5. Maybe somewhere in your lineage there's another ethnic mix.

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 15/07/2007 10:41

born in the caul-very lucky.
gives them the gift of the gab and means they will never die of drowning.(allegedley!]

we are caucasion family buyt my brother had one and so did his daughter.
they both have dark hair and olivey skin.

no idea where it comes from in our family.

GryffindorGHOSTY · 15/07/2007 10:52

Both my children had them but have now faded.
I am white (light brown hair, green eyes, fair skin) DH is white (ginger, when he had hair lol, a million freckles) - DS is blonde, blue eyed and freckly and DD is very blond, brown eyed and turning freckly.

BUT BUT BUT ... my mother is South African and although from a white family she looks mixed race ... black curly hair, dark olive skin and deep dark almost black eyes - it is commonly accepted in my family that my mother is a 'throw back' - her family were original dutch settlers in SA and there were many mixed marriages in the days BEFORE the British took over.

I think most people have black ancestors these days ... with migration of cultures over hundreds of years it surely must be so?

christywhisty · 15/07/2007 11:41

Ds had one on his tail bone. Looked like an awful bruise. His faded by the time he was a toddler i think.
My dad was greek cypriot, so DS is 1/4 cypriot which is where he got his from.
