Vit B12 and Vit D Asthma link

Young adult DD has been generally unwell for the last year or so suffering badly with migraines, costochondritis and then was diagnosed with asthma earlier this year.
She’s now been diagnosed with vitamin B12 and D deficiencies, has been given supplements and starts injections this week.

The asthma took us all a bit by surprise as there’s no family history or anything but we wondered if there was any link to the B12?

She’s been tested for coeliac as that was my first thought but it was negative.

No advice but watching with interest.

Young DD has similar symptoms and we're waiting for her paeds appointment.

Almost everyone in the UK is vit D deficient - everyone should be supplementing. We don’t get enough UV

Vit B12 deficiencies are also super common as soil bacteria are the primary source and no one grows their own food anymore plus if she limits eggs or meat products this will limit her absorption from these sources

I also have a vit d , b12 and folate deficiency , struggle with severe migraines (only started a year ago and have been hospitalised twice , and finally diagnosed end of January with asthma how interesting !

I have b12 deficiency (from pernicious anaemia) but I've never heard of a link with asthma. However, it is very common to experience breathlessness and 'sighs' all the time, it's part of the anaemia as you have malformed red blood cells which can't transport oxygen effectively.

BestIsWest · 14/04/2019 22:13

I suffer from vit D deficiency myself (have had various calcium related issues over the years) so I’ve been able to give her advice on that.

Re Pernicious anaemia, I know various family members have had it (My gran, an uncle) is it hereditary and dies she need to be tested for it?

wonder if littlebunny is my dd

And she hasn’t eaten an egg knowingly since she was about a year old, detests them.

BestIsWest Pernicious anaemia can run in families. They can run a blood test for it but it's pretty common to get false negatives anyway so not always that useful. Once she's started her injections, the tests will give wrong results so maybe doc just decided not to bother.

Basically unless she's a vegan, she should be getting enough B12 from her food. If she's not then there is a problem absorbing. Whatever the reason for this (Pernicious anaemia, coeliac, other bowel issues) the treatment is the same anyway

BestIsWest · 14/04/2019 22:47

She’s not vegan but is lactose intolerant so avoids dairy, doesn’t eat eggs but does eat chicken and fish.

She is going to mention the pernicious anaemia at her next appointment but that is when she has her first injection anyway.
