Getting urine sample from an 8 month old....how to?

Hi,

I need to get a urine sample from my DS who is 8 months old.

All I've been given is one of the urine sample pots.

What is the best way to get a urine sample?

Is it possible to get those pouches that you stick to the stomach and catch it that way?

Thx

Unfortunately its a waiting game. Sit there with his manhood (babyhood) dangling in the pot and wait. Give him a drink to help, read stories etc and keep him in the pot till he pees.

This comes from someone that spent 5 hours in A&E doing this with her 12 month old. Finally he pees all over my hand but I manage to catch enough in the pot!

It normally doesn't take that long, but DS was dehydrated thats why there was a 5 hour wait.

we had one of those pouches for dd and it was easy but they don't give them out in hospital coz of risk of contamination apparently.

The doctors surgery will have special bags to to stick over his bits to collect his sample. Thats what we had to do for dd. I guess it would be the same for boys.

Put your best dress on. Be due to go out in one minute. Go to change his nappy and he'll pee right in the air. Copiously.

Just be sure to have something to catch it.

OK, perhaps that won't work.

All too true Peaches! He went through a stage of doing a golden shower each nappy change, but he's been really good recently (or maybe my timing's been better).

Anyway, just took his nappy off and within a couple of minutes he did a wee! I got 5mls, so I hope that's enough.

I think next time (if there is a next time) I might ask if there's an easier way. If they give girls those pouches I might ask for one for my DS - shows they do have them (in Oz I did get given a pouch for him).

Thx for your advice (now I have to make sure it gets there in good time and doesn't sit around the GP for the weekend!)

have you got a bumbo seat? If so put baby in there and it should catch it!

KathH · 13/07/2007 21:32

we were given a pouch to take home for ds2 when he was about 4 months old - I was useless though - keep getting the giggles as it made his bits look like an elephants face

My friends DOG had diabetes. They had to follow it round the garden with a frying pan tring to catch wee for a sample

mm22bys · 14/07/2007 07:14

Oh poor dog.

Yes I do have a bumbo, that's good idea.

Well after successfully getting my sample yesterday, I took it down to the GP, let the hv know it was on its way, and thought all was good.

Well, till 5pm when I got a phonecall from said hv who told me it hadn't gone off because she hadn't got my message and so there was no form in the bag!

This is the same hv who kept me waiting for one hour to weigh him a week ago, but she was actually away, and hadn't botheredto let me know she wasn't going to be there.

I am so fed up with her - feel she has twice now let DS down....

(Oh I asked her about the pouch, and she said they give the bottles to even baby girls as it's "less contaminated").
