Pregnant with Hypothyroidism

I am 13 weeks pregnant with my second child who is now 2 1/2. I was diognosed with hypothyroidism 6 months after the birth and have so far been fine taking daily thyroxin. I am now expecting again after a miscarriage at 12 weeks and I seem to be chasing my doctor to ensure that my thyroid levels are checked. So far have not received the first results from blood taken at my nuchal scan last week. I am getting worried as I am not sure of the implications of my levels dropping. I am feeling exhausted and beginning to worry that the baby's development may be suffering. Has anyone else been through a pregnancy with this condition. Please help.

Yes, I'm hypothyroid and have been through 3 pregnancies without any change to my thyroxine prescription. Also had good births. Don't panic. If you've had a blood test since getting pg, they are likely to rush back to you if any change so no news is probably good news. Every one feels v tired in pregnancy - I certainly did. All 3 dc healthy at birth, good weights too. Good luck with this pregnancy.

Thank you for that - it has certainly put my mind at ease. Just got back from the doctors this morning after pestering him to hurry the results along and he has called to say no change. You are tired and that's because you're are pregnant he told me. I guess you do panic somewhat especially when words like 'congenital disorders' and the risk of slow brain development fall into the research you do. You having had 3 healthy pregnancies is great to hear.

I can second everything elasticwoman says. Ive had 4 healthy pregnancies whilst taking thyroxine, last baby weighing in at 10lb 2oz ouch!

And as for "slow brain development" humphhhh!
Dd1 is in top 5% achievement nationally for KS2 SATS, scoring 100% in 3 papers and is officially G & T. That's Gifted and Talented, not her drug of choice.

Doctors are very fond of quoting Worst Case Scenario.

Pupness I was hypothyroid before I got pg with DS and my meds weren;t changed, either, but I was monitored monthly throughout - will you be having monthly bloods taken? It would at least reassure you.

I ha d atextbook oregnancy & DS absolutely fine.

What I would say though, is although it seems a way off now, make sure they continue to test you regularly post-partum, especially if you BF.

My levels dropped really low after I had DS and I didn;t realise for ages until I was in a very bad state.

HTH, don;t worry too much

I've been on thyroxine for over 20yrs and since had two uneventful pg's. Over all that time my levels have never changed once. As long as you're being monitored I don't think you need to worry at all.

Thank you all for making me feel much better. Unfortunately, the Consultant called me at home and said the results the doctor had given me were not entirely correct and that I was to increase my dose by 25 mcg! I can only hope that I have not been too late in up-ing the dose. You can never assume people will do their jobs i guess but I have been asked to return in August for another test.

Hope the extra Thyroxine makes you feel better and less anxious, Pupness.

I take this and am preg - keep a check on the levels with blood tests and call to get the results. Best wishes xxx
