Hi i was just hugging my partner and his heart rate felt really fast usually his resting heart rate is like 50. Hes a fit 25 year old who use to be a footballer but not so much now. He usually has blood pressure of 110/77 but just now his heart rate was 119 and blood pressure 159/80. He says he feels absolutely fine but now a bit anxious because im panicing. Hes just eaten some spicy fajitas (if that means anything) just looking for opinion on what people would make of this.

The BP machine is only a guide and the way a BP is taken blocks the blood vessels in the arm so it actually takes away the pulse.

Also you need to position the transducer over the brachial artery, not many people bother to do that, even some HCP just wrap the cuff around.

If you take it with your fingers you can feel if it is irregular.

If you do take a pulse and it is irregular don't sorry, take a deep breath and hold your breath while you take the pulse, it will even out. This is because your lungs and heart often touch and you get a little bit of irregularity with your breathing.

My DH usuallly has a resting HR in the 30s (very fit endurance athlete - it slightly alarmed some of the medical professionals when he was in hospital following an accident recently) but after a big meal it easily goes up over 100. I wouldn’t stress it unless he feels it’s irregular.

@sashh i often take it with my fingers. I wont go off the bp machine anymore. Thanks so much!

@Thatsnotmyotter that sounds just like my partner although not as fit anymore he used to be a semi professional footballer but does still do a very physical job.
