If something is serious in blood tests will they ring you urgently?

Hello,
I had my bloods done today at 11:45 pm just in time for lab drop offs apparently. I had a full blood count checking for anaemia. I was just wondering, if it was something like Leukaemia would they have rang me this evening? I've read people being contacted within hours if they have it but I'm anxious and don't know what to think.
Just wondering if anyone knew anything about blood test results?
Thankyou

Usually the would do a blood smear to look for leukaemia. Was the doctor worried you may have this? Any serious abnormalities would be picked up quickly but not necessarily the same day.

MancaroniCheese · 02/04/2019 20:32

Yes, a relative had a doctor knock on the door at 2am as they had found something on a blood test and the hospital tried calling them several times with no reply (from a withheld number so they ignored it Hmm)

Hi OP, that’s exactly what happened with my daughter. She had the blood test at 11am and the surgery rang at 4pm and said take her to hospital who were expecting her.
It was leukaemia, she’s now in remission.
Hopefully everything will be ok with your results.

sweetnsuga123 · 02/04/2019 20:39

Hi Wildboar, the doctor didn't specifically mention Leukaemia but I have been pale breathless frequent infections and I feel faint all the time so she said she'd check my blood.

MancaroniCheese, thankyou for the reassurance! I have been checking my phone all day so hopefully no visits this evening!

If it was something serious, they'd contact you. Its probably something unexciting like anemia or a vitamin deficiency. I was passing out and having heart palpitations, pale, tired. Had to go to hospital a few times. Thought I was dying. Turned out I had postural low blood pressure and just needed to drink more water and take more salt. I hope it's something similarly mundane for you.

sweetnsuga123 · 02/04/2019 20:59

Thankyou Greenlegobox I am hoping it is mundane to but also hope they find something in a way so I can stop feeling so tired and faint

My daughter has bone marrow failure, and was very tired and breathless. Had the blood test in the morning and they phoned a few hours later telling her to go to A&E so yes in my experience they get back to you the same day with anything serious.

iVampire · 02/04/2019 21:10

Hi - IME yes they will get in touch with you rapidly if there is something seriously amiss.

I had bloods taken one day (for something completely different) and a call from my GP the next saying that haemolotogy needed to see me urgently, had made an appointment for me first thing the following day and urged me to drop everything to be there.

My diagnosis is leukaemia (CML) and I have been stable in a kind of functional remission for over a year now.

Do not google blood cancers - treatment for many has been revolutionised in recent years, but there is still a lot of the outdated and scarier info lingering online,

I hope you get results soon, and that yours are not adverse

sweetnsuga123 · 02/04/2019 21:11

Thankyou for replying WeevilKnievel I appreciate it, I wish you the best of luck for you and your daughter

I had a blood test last Thursday and on Friday the GP rang me... and mine is a straightforward Vit D deficiency but she wanted me to start meds pronto.

I think if it's remotely concerning they would ring asap

Yep. I had mine done and the GP rang me at 7pm. She diagnosed me after 8 years of illness and I've never been so happy to be diagnosed as unwell Grin

MancaroniCheese · 03/04/2019 12:27

Glad to provide a bit of reassurance, hoping it is nothing serious for you
