My son aged 7 has very smelly farts usually at least 1/2 days a week, the sort of ones where you have to leave his bedroom door open for fear of suffocation in the night.

Usually this wouldn't concern too much, but my dh is really starting to worry as he had this when he was young and later in life he developed a serious bowel disease (uc) and is so worried for our little boy. Everytime our ds has diarreah (sp), belly ache my dh starts to worry, although I don't think ds has any more problems in that area then most children (ie loose stools probably 1 day a week to most ~ sorry again)

I would really like to reassure dh by showing him this thread and saying its perfectly normal.

my husband is just the same, and according to his mother has always been like that!

Don't know if it is the cause, but dh eats HUGE amounts of roughage- brown bread, vegetables, fruit etc.

april74 · 12/07/2007 08:44

also should mention that he eats lots of healthy foods and loves his fruit and veg.

DS has days like this but is usually connected with what he has eaten:

cheese, beans, cabbage are prime offenders

saltireslytherin · 12/07/2007 09:06

DS1 gets like that - they are vile, and often make me retch. He suffers with constipation as well, don't know if this has anything to do with it. I posted oon here about it and some posters seemed to think he possibly had a wheat intolerance, but cutting out the wheat hasn't made much difference. The GP said "it's perfectly normal", but I don't think a smell as bad as that is normal

hippipotami · 12/07/2007 10:48

My ds (also age 7) does the most horrendous farts - probably once or twice a week. It ties in with what he has eaten - beans/pulses/onions/eggs being the worst offenders.

He eats loads of fruit/veg and we have brown bread, so I think it is quite normal.

Dh is the same - his farts could strip wallpaper. No bowel problems though, just smellyness.

I can understand why your dh is worried, but am sure your ds is just fine. If you are worried, get him checked out for peace of mind.

I once was on the brink of phoning an ambulance for dd, convinced she had appendicitis (and I am not a panicker!) The she did a massive, paint stripping horrendous fart, smiled and fell asleep!

hk78 · 12/07/2007 14:16

hmmm, nice

my children have started having this problem since they started having school dinners
i mean, obviously, they had farted before that, but since starting school dinners they are really.......rancid and greasy

so i'm thinking they're not really following the jamie oliver route with the menus, just pretending that they are?!

because these pungent trumps do not happen over the weekend or school holidays (at home, it healthy stuff all the time)

hmmm....

and another thing..........

it's funny isn't it, how quick your memory fades

when you had to change their nappies and wipe their bums all the time, you were sort of immune to it

then, as soon as they're toilet trained and doing it themselves, just being in the room with one of their farts is enough to have you gagging, lol

april74 · 12/07/2007 17:28

thanks for your replies it should reassure dh

My son has these too and they are vile, has it at least twice a week, eggy ones are his speciality. He has been known to clear a room in 5 seconds.

earlgrey · 14/07/2007 08:13

LOL hk78!! That's so true! Have you been feeding him too much Ryvita or muesli?
