which is more cruel, to wake a sleeping baby to change a dirty nappy or to leave a sleeping baby in a dirty nappy?

DS has just gone to bed, i' sure he's dirtied his nappy. Do i a)wake him, change him and hope he goes back to sleep ok or b) wait until he wakes up himself (which he is likely to do because of the dirty nappy) and change him when he wakes up?

This may seem like a stupid questionbut hey ho, thought i'd see what the general concensus was.

change him while sleepy and cross fingers an toes and hope he goes back.

JoanCrawford · 11/07/2007 19:18

change the nappy

aloha · 11/07/2007 19:19

waking is crueller.

REIDmylips · 11/07/2007 19:19

He's in a grobag and pjs, there's no way he'll sleep through it!

If he has gone to bed for the night definitely change him.

lurkylou · 11/07/2007 19:20

depends on how bad the smell is!!!

Leave him to sleep if you can stand the smell!! He's sure wake when he feels uncomfortable

REIDmylips · 11/07/2007 19:22

doesnt smell much at all, think i'll leave him an hour until he's in a deep sleep, then change him.

Thanks for the advice

would change the nappy..will deff sleep longer.

fannyannie · 11/07/2007 19:22

would depend on whether I knew my child was susceptible to nappy rash and whether it would wake them being in a dirty nappy.

Sometimes DS2 (3 3/4yrs) does a poo in his nappy about 1hr after going to bed - and we never change him - even worse sometimes if DS3 (7 weeks) does a poo around his 4.30am 'wake up' I'll often leave him (as he has a bf and goes back to sleep VERY quickly) until he wakes up again around 7

REIDmylips · 11/07/2007 19:24

i will certinly not leave him all night in a dirty nappy! just cant decide whether to wake him or wait until he wakes himself.

He is 10 months and (touch wood) has not hadnappy rash at all.

I would always change, but DS is very susceptible to nappy rash.

talcytrelawny · 11/07/2007 19:26

Sorry, reidmylips...x posted..

Flibbertyjibbet · 11/07/2007 19:31

Blimey do some babies sleep if they have a dirty nappy? Not mine, so no dilemma really - just change nappy and they go back to sleep!
I think though if they didn't wake up I would still change it, as he will wake himself up just as you nod off or start doing somehting. He will prob be very grumpy though when you wake him up!

Ceebee74 · 11/07/2007 19:32

Hey Reidy - I am sure our DS's are telepathically linked as guess what my DS has done tonight (I think) for the first time?? You guessed it - dirtied his nappy as he was falling asleep....and I thought the same as you.

Have put him in his cot and am hoping for the best (not 100% sure he has done but there were some strange noises coming from his bottom half )

Just popping out to pick up a takeaway - chat later if you are around.

donnie · 11/07/2007 19:34

I would change the nappy but my 2 dds were always very nappy rash prone.

Tutter · 11/07/2007 19:35

i would change

and would time it so he's in a deep sleep at the time (20 mins in or thereabouts)

REIDmylips · 11/07/2007 19:38

hi Ceebee!! naughty naughty having a take away! let me know what you do regarding the dirty nappy!!

lol at telepathcally linked!

OP posts:
BabiesEverywhere · 11/07/2007 19:39

Change him straight away to prevent nappy rash and hope he goes back to sleep

If he does this regularly, maybe consider sitting him on a potty for a couple of minutes before he goes to bed ?

REIDmylips · 11/07/2007 19:40

right, i'm off to change the nappy! wish me luck!

OP posts:
suezee · 11/07/2007 19:41

i would stick a bottle in ds mouth and change his nappy as quietly and without as much moving as possible lol

REIDmylips · 11/07/2007 19:56

all done, clean and sleeping again, phew! thanks everyone

my DS's must be as wierd as me - all 3 of them (well DS3 so far, but could change as he's only 7 weeks), happily poo and then sleep ...and no I'm not saying that I do that too just that I'm wierd and so are they

REIDmylips · 11/07/2007 20:05

lol FA, i have a feeling ds would have slept for quite some time too, but didn't like the idea of him being in a stinky nappy all night

OP posts:
Katy44 · 11/07/2007 20:15

I've often wondered this
Plus, when he's in his grobag I can't really tell without unzipping it whether it's dirty or not, so by the time I've got it unzipped and out of the way I might as well just change the nappy
