Incorrect Iron Blood Test?

I ordered an online blood test kit from Medichecks that tests 5 things to find out if I have low iron, one of which was a ferritin test.

They sent out the pack which included a finger prick and a vial. I was unable to get enough blood to fill the vial and when I finally gave up and closed the vial to shake it, the blood had coagulated and wouldn’t move when I shook it.

I sent it off to the lab anyway just to see if they could do the tests with the small amount. They said they were unable to do 4 of the 5 test but they did send a result for the ferritin test. This turned out to be 235 ug/l which I was very surprised about since I was testing as I’m having symptoms of low iron.

Do you know if it’s possible this was an incorrect result due to the poor sample taken? They are offering to redo the test and I will get bloods drawn this time but wondering if that result is accurate or if it could be affected that’s much by how I took the sample?

Perfectly normal result even if your iron Hb) is low .
If you already know you have low iron then I take it your taking iron supplements ?
If your ferritin was low all that would tell you is that you need iron supplements ... which if you already know you have your on them anyway iykwim.
I'd be more inclined to know why my iron was low in the first place .
Heavy periods ?
What was normal for you prior or is your normal lower than average ?
If for example you normally run an HB of 140 and now it's 80 you'd need to know why and where the bleeding is happening ..
That's why blood tests should be done with the knowledge and support of your GP or practice nurse because they are qualified to interpret the results with you .

Ferritin isnt a particularly stable marker. It rises with inflammation so a cold etc could affect the result. Also alcohol affects it a lot if you had any in days around test. I have high ferritin so just finding all this info out at the moment ( I have high iron though not low)
