I don't know if anyone remembers my post almost 2 weeks ago about me, my dh and my son all having scarlet fever and how much we were all suffering (mostly the adults tbh). We finished our course of antibiotics last Tuesday and although on the Tues itself my throat was still mildly irritated by Wed through to Monday it was completely fine.

Yesterday afternoon it started to mildy hurt again, and of course I've woken at 12am, 2am and 4am with the most horrendous throat pain and ear pain, both ears. I'm supposed to be at work this morning and I already took 2 working days (plus a scheduled off day) to recover from this last time.

  1. I can't cope with this again, it's so fucking painful and my pain threshold is shit, last time I cried twice over the pain.

  2. I'm gonna get in trouble if I have to take any more time off work.

  3. why is this happening a week after finishing the antibiotics? It's definitely strep or tonsillitis or something bacterial, this is far too fucking painful to be viral, I have no cold symptoms and the onset has been so sudden just like last time.

Don't forget your body is fighting a nasty infection so it will be tired. Plus the meds you've had to have and are still on will probably have side effects. Your body is trying to heal so it has no energy for anything else - and you haven't been able to eat either so not been able to refuel.

It's very frustrating though! Hang in there. Chicken soup might be good for energy, healing and easy to eat (if you're not veggie obviously).

dottygiraffe you're right, I think lack of food is definitely having an impact as I'm quite slight to begin with 8st 7, dread to think what I've lost this week! I'm eating yogurts, banana's and soft breads mostly, will def send dh for chicken soup today and soft baguette to dip in it. I am so fed up of resting now, I want to feel human again. And my poor son is also bored of my resting, his logic "mums not at work so why isn't she playing with me?!" lol.

Glad things are bit better. When this is all better comfort yourself that DS knows that things are hard when you you are not around but DF is around. A game of who can be the quietest and stillest the longest?

You poor thing! I had what the Dr thought was scarlet fever last year and it came back as tonsillitis 4 times in a row, I was ready to shoot myself the fourth time. Luckily avoided hospital but it was sheer hell and so much time off work! Make sure you take plenty of time to recover properly this time.

Nogodsnomasters · 30/03/2019 19:10

callistone christ, that is my worst nightmare that this will come back again. Were you treated with antibiotics all 4 times? What was the outcome in the end?

singasong12 thank you for the flowers. We have mainly done "quiet" games of colouring in and drawing, plus dh took son to shops to buy my mother's day card and gift and lunch at McDonald's so I got some quiet time to myself during that.

Antibiotics every time but the last lot I took for 10 days and that finally did it. They were going to recommend investigations if it came back again and I was ready for it, I have private health through work so I would have had them out in an instant! Really hope this time does the trick for you.

Nogodsnomasters · 30/03/2019 23:10

callistone yes I read online that strep throat needs 10 days of antibiotics but a fortnight ago all 3 of us were only given 7 days worth each! Thankfully it seems to have worked okay for my ds and dh but not me. This time round I had 1 & 1/2 days worth of normal tabs before losing the ability to swallow followed by 24hrs worth of iv antibiotics and then sent home with a further 7 days worth of tablets so I really hope to God thats enough to knock it on the head this time. I can't imagine going through this a further 2 times, you must have been ready to give up the ghost at that point.

Be careful of developing a resistance to antibiotics! I'm surprised you've been prescribed so many. Before he passed away, my dad developed MRSA, a so-called superbug that is unresistant to antibiotics. I don't wish to alarm you further but you should be aware of this. By the way, my father's death was not caused by MRSA but by unrelated heart failure.

Nogodsnomasters · 31/03/2019 09:48

shiveringtimber this month has been my 1st time taking antibiotics in at least 2 years or more, the last time was just a 3 day course for a wisom tooth infection before I had it removed. So I'm hoping that just because I've needed a big batch this time I'll be OK. My dh on the other hand has had 4 courses in the last 12 months, once for his scarlet fever, twice for chest infections and once for dry socket after tooth removal.

Sorry for reviving old thread, if anyone is interested that is. I finished my antibiotics yesterday after 10 days and attended a gp appointment yesterday because although pain with swallowing is gone completely, I still have pain on one side when I yawn and both my ears still feel itchy and tingly. The doc said she could not see any signs of infection in my throat but both ear canals are inflamed still but no gunk. I've never experienced pain with yawning before so I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this after a bad throat infection? This is now day 11 since infection started. Since this was a repeat infection that came back worse the 2nd time round I am terrified of it coming back again for a 3rd go at me! For a start I will get a discipline at work for having 3 separate periods of sickness in 2 months if this happens.
