Renting- Mould

I am currently renting a flat with my boyfriend, we got in contact with our landlord last week as we have just found bad mould in our bedroom under our bed.. when I say bad I mean shockingly bad. Anyone know what we can do as all he did was send us a dehumidifier.. help is really appreciated?!

Most likely it is due to your lifestyle. Bedrooms are often worse, because of all the breathing at night 5hst releases condensation.

You need to make sure you don't cramp furniture/boxes together, air needs to be able to circulate. Open the window every day, really open ideally for 1/2 hour. Dobt ever dry clothes on radiators. A humidifier will help.

If you genuinely do all that and it gets, worse, I'd pay for a, specialist report and if it confirms it is due to a structural defect, send it to your landlord in registered letter asking for them to fix the problem and reimburse you for the assessment.

Dehumidifier's are great actually. If you use it correctly and open windows and all that swingofthings said, you should be able to get rid of it. Advice I have been given was to remove the mould with a weak bleach solution.

We dont dry anything in there. The window is on window lock, we live on ground floor flat so I dont like to leave it open properly unless I'm in. Theres only a bed and now an empty wardrobe as we had to empty everything and put it in the living room due to the mould getting onto the clothes. We have an ottoman bed and underneath one the slats they are mouldy and under the bed itself on the carpet is mouldy. If I use a bleach I dont want it to damage the carpet and us not to get out deposit back. We have 3 months left in here before we have to be out. I have message the landlord but he hasn't replied.

I would only use weakened bleach on hard surfaces, not on the carpet. I would put the dehumidifier on. You can leave it on full while you are at home or your can leave it on a setting where it kicks in when the humidity rises in the room. The carpet will dry out and you will be able to vacuum it up. Really, try the dehumidifier for a few days and see if it makes a difference.

We have had the dehumidifier on constantly for the past 3 days. I have used a spray bleach for on the walls and touch would that seems to have worked but now it's just under the bed as I dont know how to clean it up without the spores going air borne. We have spoke to the landlord and he sent the dehumidifier and said he would get someone to come and have a look but he hasn't so I have been in contact with him and haven't heard anything back from him. With it been under the bed and mattress it's really affecting our health especially my boyfriend as he had a really bad cough.

It won't let me upload a photo

Is it on the mattress too? I'd ask for a new one and for him to send a professional cleaner for the carpet. As to drying out, a dehumidifier is what professionals use. Is it filling up the tank quickly?

Jasmine1002 · 23/03/2019 20:08

Yeah it's on the mattress a little bit, but because the slats are we it is marking the mattress too. I have tried to get in contact with him both myself and my boyfriend but nothing. It's also got the bottom of our brand new wardrobe too, hence having the take all the clothes out and having them in the living room.

Not sure what else you can do, to be honest. I hope he gets in touch with you soon.

Jasmine1002 · 23/03/2019 20:15

Thankyou for trying to help, :) I hope that he does too. I've been sleeping on the sofa at night to avoid sleeping in the bed but my boyfriend works nights and during the week he could sleep on the sofa but on a weekend it's more difficult.

I'm sorry I couldn't suggest anything more useful. Best of luck getting it sorted out.

Jasmine1002 · 23/03/2019 20:19

Thankyou fingers crossed we hear back from them.
