We lived abroad for a few years so ds missed his "preschool" screening appointment in UK. When dd was called for hers, shortly after we returned, I asked whether ds could also have one too but as he was just 8 he was "too old" for their system.

I had previously had them checked though, on a visit to UK, as dd does have a superifical porbelm and we wanted a second opinion and he had passed screeening at his then school. Recently had him checked again, following OT appointments includign poor hand/eye coordination and tracking, and he is fine

olivio,
as i had a lazy eye as a child, my children were automatically screened at the local NHS eye clinic. Just looking back at my records, dd had her first screening at aged 10mths - they checked for general vision and muscle imbalance at this stage. As no problems were detected, she then had another routine check a year later, to be finally discharged from the eye clinic at her fifth birthday. A similar picture followed for ds. Both now have annual eye checks at the local opticians - ds loves them!

At 10 months you should be able to get the referral through your health visitor, all areas should have a NHS community service for children's eye testing usually run by the local Primary Care Trust. I mentioned to our hv at dd's 2 yr check that I had a lazy eye in childhood and she referred her straight away, we got an appointment within weeks. She then had another check at 2.5 and they want to see her again just before starting school. So far so good

I took my ds to an opticians at 2yrs old as he was always rubbing his eyes. Turns out he had a bir of grit stuck and the optician removed it. He advised ds should be seen on a yearly basis. He is now 5 and has an eye test every year. Vision Express do reminders.
