Why would the side of my toe be numb?

Not all of my toe, just the top and outerpart of my big toe. No new shoes. No injuries. Mystified.

Are you diabetic? Have any problems with your circulation?

ScreamingValenta · 23/03/2019 10:56

Could it be a trapped nerve? I'd get it checked out with your GP.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/03/2019 11:13

Not diabetic and no other pains anywhere else.

Had you been sitting in the same position for a long time before it happened? That can result in a trapped nerve. As I said, I would get it checked out with your GP or if you develop any other worrying symptoms, go to out of hours or call 111.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/03/2019 12:11

I don't think so. Normal day and normal activities.
It was numb last night and still numb lunchtime today. No pain, or tingling just dull and q numb.

The only time I've had anything like that was in my younger days, when I stupidly wore high heels that were too narrow and squashed my toes - it wore off after a day or so. I've had similar in my fingers from a trapped nerve in my elbow, though, and it took weeks for the feeling to come back. I definitely think you should get it checked out medically.

CoperCabana · 23/03/2019 12:23

Hmmm. Ingrown toenail. Mine started with a similar feeling. I pressed it and pus came out. Bleurggh!

bakingisnotforwimps · 23/03/2019 12:28

Do you sit with your foot tilted to one side, with your big toe side on against the floor IYCWIM?

I get a numb little toe often because I do this (and can't get out of the habit!)

TwitterQueen1 · 23/03/2019 16:45

Are you very overweight OP? If so, could be neuropathy. I have a feeling you're not... so could it be plantar fasciitis?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/03/2019 20:34

Excellent suggestions all round.

But...

I don't wear high heels.

I don't sit with my foot tilted to that side with my foot pressed on my big toe.
I wear a size 14 - 16, so I could do with losing a stone a few pounds but I'm not very overweight. I have had neuropathy in the back of my mind as my Dad had it, despite not being diabetic, due to degeneration of his spine, but I don't think it was due to a hereditery condition.

I did a bit of walking around a zoo today and that toe was a bit sore when I was walking on and off. Still numb.

I do have a gp appt in a couple of weeks for a prescription check so will mention it then if my toe is still numb then.

I have very, very occasionally (like for 3 separate days ever about a month ago) had the pain in my instep like plantar fascitis, and it's a little tender if I press on it there today after all today's zoo walking.

I'd say PF (cos I'm a Dr too. I'm really not Do you wear flatties? They are really not good for PF, you need a low heel.

AuditAngel · 23/03/2019 21:40

I’m really interested in the answers as I have the same issue. Mine’s been dead for about 4-5 years now. I have had ultrasounds, but the results were normal.

I have pernicious anaemia, but I was told that if I had nerve damage it woulD be the same in each foot.

Incidentally, i think mine is very slowly improving

AuditAngel · 23/03/2019 21:41

And I have had PF in both feet, but never went to the doctors about it

handmademitlove · 23/03/2019 21:43

Tarsal tunnel - a bit like carpal tunnel in your foot! Mine was misdiagnosed as PF by 3 different Drs..

li1972 · 23/03/2019 21:49

See a podiatrist. Otherwise you'll get a long list of possible diagnoses with 80% of them highly unlikely.

twattymctwatterson · 23/03/2019 21:58

That's so weird op. I've been getting this recently. I've been exercising more so I've put it down to some kind of injury. I do have (well controlled) fibromyalgia so tend to put niggly pains down to that

Soontobe60 · 23/03/2019 22:17

I have this. A podiatrist said it's because I have a small bunion. I now use insoles that have helped.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/03/2019 22:36

My two big toes do not sit straight and although I wouldn't say I have a bunion, the toes do bend away from each other. And I've noticed that the numbish toe bends noticeably further than the other toe. Perhaps more than I've noticed it do before.

My toes are grim as it is. My littlest toes sit on top of my fourth toe, so I don't get my feet out much and don't wear strappy sandals cos they're not that sightly.

I don't wear complete flatties, no. They hurt my knees.

I can't talk foot-issues with DH. He's not at all sympathetic and says that when mine are as bad as his he'll take notice.

He's an amputee. Grin Grin Grin And thinks he's funny.

That is very funny! Grin
