DS bitten right through his tongue...

My DS fell / tripped and landed on his chin and has bitten rigth through his tongue in the middle of it. There was loads of blood, and we spoke to our local minor injuries unit who were fantastic and we took him in just to check it over. THey siad they don't like to stitch them as the child has to have a general anaesthetic and like to let nature takes its course.
Has anyone else had experience of this and if so how long did it take to heal and is it normal not to stitch? The hole is about 1"
Thanks in advance

DS2 did this on sunday night- had to get an ambulance out to him as I panicked.

Its ok now- healing nicely and not bothering him at all- you can hardly see it now.

god poor him and poor you...sounds horrendous, what a nightmare.

no experience but just wanted to send you some calming vibes as if i were you i'd be in a total state.

argh its all the blood thats frightening. Luckily it heals really quickly

tissy · 10/07/2007 19:57

quite normal not to stitch

will heal very quickly- a few days

meanwhile give him plenty of bland stuff like ice cream, mashed potato, and avoid acidy stuff, as it could sting

my brother fell down the stairs and bit through his, almost right through, it was liteally hanging by a thread. they didn't stitch it. tongues bleed lots when they are cut but heal very quickly iirc it is the fastest healing part of the body

If it doesn't seem to be healing, and they say 'oh, tongues don't get infected', don't believe them. It probably won't happen, but I'm just saying.

DH did the same playing rugby aged 17. I seem to remember it took a few weeks to heal completely and he could only eat soups, scrambed eggs, smoothies etc for a few days as it hurt to chew.
The only side effect is that he can no longer roll his tongue!

Your poor DS.

A few years ago my DD bit her tongue but it was down the middle and when she cried it parted!(A bit Like a forked tongue) Healed quite quickly without any stitches. Its not joined completely flat though and i can still see where it split.

MM that sounds awful poor ds and poor you . No experience of tongue biting but have known many mouth injuries and found my Mum's assertion that they tend to heal relatively quickly to be true, largely because there is so much blood there. Really do hope that ds feeling better soon.

mistersmum · 10/07/2007 20:02

Wow that was quick..it does appear to be healing well, and I can't wait for his yucky breath to go and he keeps asking me to kiss it better (he is 27mo) which feels a bit wierd!! Thanks and I am keeping an eye on it. The dr said helpfully keep it clean and rinse with salt water!!HOW EXACTLY??

Yes it heals quickly. Friends ds did this age 8. It bled a lot and he couldn't talk properly for couple of days and ate mush. Healed up fine, no further problems.

My dh did this as well. No stitches for him either. It was over 20years ago, he has a slightly odd looking ridge in his tongue but it doesn't bother him.
