DD (15 weeks) has been diagnosed w profound sensironeural hearing loss. DH and I were devastated at first, having no prev experience w deafness, but now DD is being accessed for a cochlear implant, maybe at age 1. Does anyone have experience with this? We don't know what to expect in terms of success, what is involved... and Google has produced such a range of possibilites it's hard to discern which stories are accurate/typical.

Hi Larney, both my nephews are prefoundly deaf from birth. dn1 was 1 when he was diagnosed, handled appallingly! Was implanted age 5/6, dn1 was diagnosed at about 10 days and implanted at I think 18 months. Now both in mainstream school with some support. When my dns were implanted the best place in the country was nottingham linkand my ds & bil fought to go there. Fabulous set up although travel is not easy from down south to the midlands they do have overnight accommodation specifically for the implanted families. The ear foundation have been fabulous, have a sort of buddy scheme, have a look here link
Best of luck in whatever decision you make

hi kikidee, a BAHA is clipped onto a little screw which is implanted into the mastoid bone behind the ear, it converts sounds to vibrations which the cochlea then picks up, and is used for conductive loss - it basically replaces the middle ear.
Dd2 has middle ear dysfunction (we're not sure why). The BAHA works so well for her - and it is so much neater and less troublesome than a regular hearing aid.

Laurney,
My dd is also profoundly deaf and was aided by 6 weeks. We use sign with her and she has over 100 signs now at 21 months.
I remember all too well the feeling of sadness and panic and fear on diagnosis. Now though, I have the most gorgeous, funny, affectionate, intersting little girl and I am so so lucky to have her.

Sorry to come to this thread late, I've only just noticed it.

Hello hello, Laurney here, hoping to bump this thread again. Kikidee, how is it going with your dd? We are progressing, dd just got hearing aids and is still on the implant process. Was wondering if you could tell if your dd's are working, or if anyone has experience with them being successful for profoundly deaf baby? The technician indicated they probably wouldn't work...
