Help! Teething 2 and a (nearly) half year old?

Poor DS3 started feeling rough yesterday morning, Temp. on the higher side of normal, not eating and tired. By the afternoon he was dribbling and crying and was very unsettled last night. He's been rubbing his ears so I wondered initially if it might be an ear infection, but the dribbling made me think of teeth.

He's had spells of being happy and running about today but has not really eaten anything, OK with fluids though.

He's now crying upstairs and doesn't want to be held, he must just want to sleep, I think. I've given him baby Nurofen and Calpol.

I don't rememeber the older Bubbles going through this.

Any experience/advice?

TIA

aww bless, sounds like teeth. My ds is 2.5 sa well and I am sure is getting his very last molars as well.
stick with the calpol etc

Thanks, fingerwoman, I'm not usually a worrier but, as I say, neither of my older two seemed to suffer like this. It's horrible when you can't comfort your child, isn't it?

Liquid Anbesol on his gums? It's a risky business trying to apply it if it's the very back molars but it does a much better job of numbing the pain than the gels ime. My ds1 used to take the Nelson's Teetha stuff too, (we told him it was magic fairy dust from the tooth fairy to help his new teeth grow) and it used to ease the fractiousness.

OTOH, it could be a ear ache/virusy type thing, esp if his temp is up a bit. Sounds a bit extreme to be just teeth in a way.

dd also a nearly 2.5 year old getting molars and hasn't been sleeping - Medised has worked for us but dd does seem to get a runny nose when she teethes (and with this lot an odd cough just for added measure !)

I think I need to get him to the GP's tomorrow to check. Did your DC's do the drooling/dribbling thing, too?

If a child has an ear infection are they consistently miserable or do they have spells of feeling OK? I imagine the lying down would make either teeth or ears feel worse?

Never had drooling but think its quite common. Also don't know about ear infections other than that I think they are worse if lying down due to pressure.

The poor thing - probably stating bleeding obvious but is he able to tell you where it hurts ?

Bubble99 · 09/07/2007 22:20

No, Wheely (and, no, not stating the bleedin' obvious )

He's reaching around his face, though. Not really ears but toddlers aren't precise, are they?

Also, he had an infection around his big toe 10 days ago (stubbed in garden and got a toe full of pus a few days later) and had strong antiB's for that. I s'pose he could get an infection so soon after having those antiB's if it was a different type of infection, IYSWIM?

I think babies/toddlers can rub their ears if teething (but then as far as I can see you blame anything on teething - I try to !!). I'd take him to the docs tomorrow if he's still suffering just to rule out an infection. Hope he/you get some sleep !

Bubble99 · 09/07/2007 22:29

Thanks, Wheely and all.

I think your advice is sound. I'll 'phone the GPs tomorrow and see if they can squeeze him in.
