I am mainly looking for stories of this resolving quickly in your family? Ds age 4 started with it first on Sunday and now dh and I started with it last night.

We all have antibiotics now but feel absolutely hellish. We had to change ds antibiotics today from penicillin to amoxicillian because he just couldn't stomach the taste and it was 4x a day for 10 days so not practical to bribe him every time and he has ASD also so difficult to coax.

Dh and I just started our antibiotics this morning. We have really bad headache, ear ache, swollen painful glands, raw throats and dh has sore joints. We've had fevers but they seem to have broken now for all 3 of us. Ds is the only one with the sandpaper rash so far. I've had to call in sick to work which I hate doing.

Tell me the antibiotics kick in after 24hrs and ill feel way better tomorrow??? 😭 I had all of 2hrs broken sleep last night and a 30 minute nap today, it was just too painful to sleep and paracetamol, nurofen and cocodamol has barely touched the sides.

I’m really surprised you’re suffering so badly with it, poor things, it’s supposed to be much milder these days than it used to be years ago. My child had it when they were 3 and we didn’t notice! Thought the rash and slight temp was a reaction to a vaccination a few days earlier. They clearly had a very mild dose, but yes, it was over quickly. Hope it is for you too.

Quartz2208 · 14/03/2019 08:12

DS had it really badly and was hospitalised with 24 hour strong antibiotics he started feeling better after 3 days but the strong antibiotics certainly helped

It’s making a comeback

Nogodsnomasters · 14/03/2019 10:21

burninggubbins tbf my son has dealt with it better than my husband and I are, he was grumpy sun & Mon and itchy with the rash but since Tues his form has been much better, probably because that's when his temperature went back to normal. I've had 5 doses of antibiotics now and really only feel slightly better than yday, if yesterday was 10/10 pain level then today would be an 8 really. My husband feels the same.

quartz2208 oh my goodness I can't believe he had to be hospitalised, was this due to dehydration or a complication or anything? I have terrible health anxiety and really worry from reading online about it spreading into other infections such as pneumonia.

My son's best friend has just had it. A few days off school then back and his usual self.

Quartz2208 · 14/03/2019 11:34

Please dont worry his happened very quickly at the start partly due to his enlarged tonsils. But the iv 24 antibiotics were amazing and made him better in no time at all

Nogodsnomasters · 14/03/2019 11:37

quartz2208 thank you, I'm trying not to freak out and just think of other things.

I had it really badly about a year ago. I was almost hospitalised as I struggled to swallow my own saliva. I had to spit it out into a bucket. It took about a week to be able to get out of bed Confused

SeaToSki · 14/03/2019 11:51

Sounds dreadful. Make sure you are all drink8ng loads and try gargling with salt water everycou0le of hours. It really effective. Make it as salty as sea water.

swingofthings · 14/03/2019 13:24

On which basis were you and your oh diagnosed with it you are not demonstrating the common rash associated with it. I was told by two GPs that it isn't poodible to be sure of a diagnosis without sending a sample but they can make an informed guess with the combination of the rash and sore throat with the very red tongue.

Could it be that you and your oh have another unpleasant virus?

DD had it twice which is very rare. First time worse but lasted longer second time.

Nogodsnomasters · 14/03/2019 19:45

swiftofthings we were told by gp that most adults don't get the rash part just the strep throat bacteria as most people over the age of 10 have resistance to the toxin that causes the rash, but how accurate that is I don't know. I did have the white coating on tongue and now red and inflamed but my husband didn't have the white tongue. We've both got yellow pus on the back of our throats, visible to ourselves.

barebelliedsneetch christ that sounds awful, I have to admit husband and I were spitting yesterday as we were creating so much saliva and couldn't bare to swallow but today we are able to manage to swallow with bracing ourselves first so I'm taking that as an improvement.

Oh OP. Sounds like you're going through it. Dd had Scarlett fever a few years ago, and she wasn't herself for about 4 days before the rash and white tongue.
She had a course of antibiotics and was back at school a week later.
Hope you all get better soon.

weekfour · 14/03/2019 20:06

My mum got it when my kids had it. She said she felt terrible for nearly a week. Make sure you take time to rest properly.

BareBelliedSneetch · 14/03/2019 20:28

nog I’d definitely call that an improvement! Trying to swallow the first day of ABs was awful, but it got easier after that. I had the rash on my thighs and stomach and back I think (I mostly remember it on my thighs, my memory of the whole thing is a bit hazy!)

I hope you start feeling better soon!

Nogodsnomasters · 14/03/2019 20:53

God I really hope this doesn't wipe out a whole week for us, Ive called in sick to work for tomorrow but I really need to go in on Saturday and of course we've just bought our first house and gets the keys on Monday so that's not helping lol.

BareBelliedSneetch · 15/03/2019 17:01

@Nogodsnomasters how are you feeling today?

Nogodsnomasters · 16/03/2019 07:56

barebelliedsneetch a great improvement actually thanks for asking. My sons rash is almost gone and he says his throat doesn't hurt anymore. I'd say my husband and I's pain level is halved. I'm attempting to go back to work today since according to the Internet we're not infectious after 24hrs of antibiotics anyway, really lacking in energy but did have the best nights sleep I've had in a week so that has helped. As long as I keep on top of my painkillers today (which are actually making a difference now compared to at the beginning) I should make it through my shift.
