Any doctors about? Freaking out about lump on foot

Can’t get an appointment til next week

Got a hard bony lump on the top of my foot between big toe and ankle. Doesn’t move and isn’t tender to touch but I have been getting pain in foot up towards ankle when I flex and point

Randomly also got pain in the front of my thigh on the same side (I can’t tell whether it’s bone pain or random nerve pain) since I went for a run this morning

I’m prone to anxiety and this is really stressing me out, thinking that it’s going to be serious and that because I have the foot thing and the thigh thing it will be something serious that is affecting the whole side of my body.

I used to run a fair bit over the last few years and the piriformis issues I have are on that side too!!

I saw another thread on here with a similar thing where people said bone spurs? Do they pop up randomly and cause this kind of pain? Do they get bigger? Could they affect my thigh and hip as well? (I have had the piriformis thing for a while and it makes my hips and lower back hurt until I massage it out so could be non linked)

Sorry for the essay, I’m trying to avoid the anxiety panic that I can feel building.

I do have an appointment for next week, just trying to stay calm until then.

Any pics?

Mmmgoats · 11/03/2019 20:41

@kissmelittleass Excuse the bad lighting - it can be hard to see it so I’ve circled it with lipstick in one 🤪

This armchair diagnosis is Morton’s Neuroma.

Mmmgoats · 11/03/2019 20:51

Well you do have a gavel which does make
you sound frightfully important and wise.
Now what the blinking heck is that? (Scared to google!)

Ganglia. (Not sure if spelt correctly)
Just s hard lump. Not dangerous at all. Years ago they would just bash it with a hard book and it would dissipate. You can get them on your wrist too. I had one, mine went away by itself. It was fairly annoying as it would rub against my shoe. Get it checked out though to be sure.

MrsEricBana · 11/03/2019 21:00

It's not that! It'll be a bony spur with a ganglion or bursa on it that has become aggravated by the running. It'll probably just calm down on its own. It won't be anything sinister but if it keeps causing you pain I'd go to GP. It may be causing pain higher up if you're walking a bit awkwardly because of your foot. Try not to worry Flowers

Mmmgoats · 11/03/2019 21:00

@ozziewozzie oh I thought they were soft jelly like sac cysts? Because this is like a bony protrusion, well that’s what it feels like, I thought it would be too hard for that. Bashing with a book? Boak!

Thank you for posting

I will definitely see the doctor I’m just really trying hard not to panic in the meantime, I’ve just come out of a horrendous period of health anxiety and was doing a lot better until I noticed this and the foot pain. My brain goes from 0-100 in about 3 seconds and I go straight for worst case scenarios.

@mrsericbana you have a beautiful husband Grin
Even if he is slightly terrifying in Dirty John

Does it make any difference that I haven’t been running for a few months? But I was doing about 50km a week every other week last year.
The pain seems to be higher up maybe when I flex and point my toe - and the thigh bone pain is worrying me too (although as I said it’s just an ache in my thigh so I don’t know if it’s bone pain)
Thanks for posting

Definitely not a morton's neuroma.

Don't know what it is without looking at it in the flesh.

mrscee · 11/03/2019 21:05

It could be a ganglion cyst I had one on my foot, I had it removed because it hurt when I wore shoes

Mmmgoats · 11/03/2019 21:06

Fair enough @fixthebone
My best description would be a bony protrusion and the actual bump doesn’t hurt itself. It’s close to a tendon though as when I press on it I can feel the tendon move on one side of the bump. It’s mainly noticeable when I point my toes.

I had a ganglion and it was really hard, I was so sure it was bony growth I persuaded the GP to let me get it x-rayed. Which was doubly embarrassing when it was a cyst because I'm the radiographer in our local hospital.

It felt like bone, I swear.

Blush Blush Blush

Mmmgoats · 11/03/2019 21:09

@mrslant youve made me feel a lot better about my silent hysterics over here. I keep poking it and saying to DH “but it feels REALLY hard like BONE”
I suspect he is getting rather sick of me!

MrSlant · 11/03/2019 21:14

I should probably do all that 'this is just a story not a health professionals opinion about your lumpy foot' malarky but I'm presuming you and I are intelligent enough to get that.

It was SO hard. The GP grabbed it between thumb and forefinger and managed to make it move a little after the x-ray and I nearly puked on him because it was so gross. Then it got bigger and bigger then one day he popped and drained in one second and I was heartbroken, I'd called him Gary and my wrist looked bare and wrong without him. But he grew again! And popped again! I'm halfway through the cycle at the moment. It's weird but I like it.

MrsEricBana · 11/03/2019 21:19

(Mmmgoats Have you SEEN him in The Other Boleyn Girl??!)

I def don't think it's anything sinister but do get the GP to have a look and you'll feel so much better.

Mmmgoats · 11/03/2019 21:22

Wait @mrslant you mean I can’t take this as an official diagnosis and you haven’t referred me to a consultant?! How RUDE Grin

See when you say moving and squeezing, I just cannot see it being possible with mine - it’s not perfectly spherical like I imagine a cyst would be IYSWIM and just so hard! But then it sounds like yours was similar (is similar? Is it now Gary the second of his name?)

Maybe I will end up naming mine once it stops terrifying me to my very core, who knows.

Poor DH who is sadly ah fait with my health anxieties keeps muttering “you probably just dropped something on it and didn’t realise, can we watch game of thrones now?”

(We are rewatching just Incase anyone panics they have missed any new ones!)

OP posts:
Mmmgoats · 11/03/2019 21:27

@mrsericbana OH I HAVE. Maybe watching it again would be a good distraction actually Grin

Sorry for my going on about it, I’ve been really trying to get a grip on my anxiety recently and had counselling since last year which has helped hugely but when it’s something you can physically feel/see it makes it much harder! So I really appreciate everyone’s responses

OP posts:
Girlinstripedpyjamas · 11/03/2019 21:35

No qualified advice about your potential Gary but I’ve had similar flare up from time to time just on one foot and it’s gone so maybe also had one? But you have my utmost sympathy on the HA. It’s awful and hideously encompassing. But it will pass. And I’m sure your foot will be ok. Sending you an unmumsnetty hug

MrsEricBana · 11/03/2019 21:38

Oh I know, I get it. It might be a spur/ganglion or whatever but I'd be amazed if it was something sinister. Go off and watch GoT with your lovely dh!

MrSlant · 11/03/2019 21:48

No he can be quite asymmetric, more pear shaped if anything. Interesting ganglion fact, if you inject dye that shows up on x-rays into the wrist (which is obviously all radiographers do for fun nowadays) it will go up into the cyst. If you inject into the cyst it won't go back down to the wrist. One way valve innit?

I know where you are coming from as well, health anxiety is rubbish, when I'm not good there is no way I'm going to last a year what with all the things wrong with me. Recent spate of healthy beetroot eating obsession had me buying diagnostic pee sticks on amazon just in case I was masking kidney cancer with my pretty pink wee...

bobstersmum · 11/03/2019 22:12

I've had a few ganglions two on my hands and one on my wrist, they were hard feeling. They came out of nowhere and stayed till they'd had enough of me then vanished. The last one was annoying me and I was going to get it looked at, but then I fell, put that hand out to block my fall, and must've jarred it or something because the ganglion was totally gone just like that.

Mmmgoats · 11/03/2019 22:28

@girlinstripedpyjamas thanks for sharing! That’s strange - it did seem to come out of nowhere (the bump) although I’ve had the ache on and off for a
Month or so but it’s very occasional and has only got worse recently

Now I’m focusing on it the side of my foot is aching as well!

Thank you to much for your kindness everyone, not everyone gets health anxiety and it does feel incredibly self absorbed but it’s like a hideous reflex! The pee sticks are totally something I would do @mrslant that is a very strange fact and I now feel equipped should that question ever pop up on QI or something similar

Thank you @mrsericbana sadly lovely
DH isn’t keen on the other Boleyn girl so that will have to be tomorrow night when he’s out!

@bobstersmum thanks for your post seems like hard ganglia are quite common I did have one on my wrist yonks ago but it was squishy and very movable which is why I dismissed the idea
