Lump in mouth

eggonmyface · 08/03/2019 20:48

Who would you see for this? A dentist or a doctor? Pea size lump under tongue and below teeth on the gum.
In a bit of a state worrying about it tonight

I would see a GP. Good luck.

pearldeodorant · 08/03/2019 21:29

Dentist. Doctors technically don't usually deal with mouths (unless maxfax etc and I'm sure they still wouldn't send you away but definitely dentist)

tobee · 08/03/2019 21:33

My dd had this a few years ago. I wasn't sure either. Ended up going to gp who referred to hospital. The maxfax dr looked at it and then removed under local in about 3 minutes. It was biopsied and was fine.

Good luck!

tobee · 08/03/2019 21:34

I think the dentist might have also referred but chose gp for quicker appointment.

shatteredandstressed · 08/03/2019 21:44

Dentist
How long has it been there?

U2HasTheEdge · 08/03/2019 21:46

Dentist. They are the experts in oral health after all.

When I went to the GP about a lump on my tongue they sent me to the dentist. Turned out to be me biting on my tongue at night. I did have health anxiety at the time though.

ShortandSweet96 · 08/03/2019 21:48

The GP will probably refer you to a dentist, see a dentist.

Could be a blocked salivary gland.

Hassled · 08/03/2019 21:50

Yes, dentist who will refer to Oral Health.
I had a lump on my tongue a few years ago - went slightly nuts with the stress - but it was just a polyp and was removed easily enough (although my god it hurt afterwards).

ChipInTheSugar · 08/03/2019 21:51

Have a google of something called dental tori - could it be that?

eggonmyface · 08/03/2019 22:42

I think I have undiagnosed Health anxiety, I do have anxiety in general. I've done nothing but google for hours/days. I have diagnosed myself with the worse case scenario obviously.
I went to the dentist yesterday who said she thinks bone or blocked gland. Seen as she just thinks I feel like she's just fobbed me off and could still be much worse.
I've been in such a state about it tonight it's driving me mad with worry.
Will the gp Run some tests do you think?

@eggonmyface

You're like me, I suffer massively with general and health anxiety.
In also a dental nurse. The dentist would not have fobbed you off when it comes to cancer.

Is it at all tender or pain to press or touch?
The GP wont do much as it's dental related. You can ask your dentist to be referred to an oral surgeon who can either a) just take a look, they see this day in day out, so it may feel like they've just glanced in your might and sent you on your way, this isn't the case. B) take a small biopsy of the area to send off for testing, for your peace of mind, or C) remove the entire lump and again, send it away for testing and let you know the results.

Please try not too worry.

ShortandSweet96 · 08/03/2019 22:58

Also just to mention, oral surgeons send almost everything they remove off for biopsy. It's nothing to worry about when they say they're sending off, they do it with cysts and everything. Its just so you have a record of what took place as its technically very minor surgery.

eggonmyface · 09/03/2019 02:58

Its really not tender or painful unless I put quite a lot of pressure on it with my finger. I can't keep my tongue away from it, constantly rolling my tongue around it so I can't forget it's there and relax.
I left feeling reassured and now it's the complete opposite. She couldn't actually tell me what it was therefore she doesn't actually know so it could be something serious even tho so thinks not. The come back if it gets bigger or bothers you stays in my head. It wouldn't get bigger if it was nothing suspicious would it?
Will the doctor just send me back to the dentist? I don't feel it's teeth related at all

OP posts:
ShortandSweet96 · 09/03/2019 08:03

Yes the doctor will just send you back to the dentist. Dentists are trained to look out for oral cancer or anything sinister. They dont just look at check ups either, but at every appointment you attend. If your dentist had any cause for concern they definitely would have let you know. That being said if you are really worried and its playing on your mind, go back to your dentist and ask for a referral to an oral surgeon to take a look.

Does the lump look red or irritated, or does the gun over it look pink and healthy like the rest of your gums?

hannah1992 · 09/03/2019 08:11

Has it just appeared? Has it got bigger over time?

I have a tiny lump under my tongue on the right side. I noticed it a couple of years ago. You can't see it but I can feel it with my tongue. I asked dentist at regular check up and she said, nothing to worry about. It's probably been there for God knows how long and I just noticed it by chance.

I highly doubt it is oral cancer, she would have seen that and noticed something dodgy straight away.

Go back and ask to be referred as it is causing you anxiety

eggonmyface · 09/03/2019 08:36

Doesn't look irritated. I can see it's white as I know where it is otherwise you can't see it only feel it. I don't know how long it's been there but on one hand I do feel like it's got to be quite new or I would have noticed it before. Everytime my tongue touches it I feel sick. I don't believe it's bone. The blocked salivary glands all say they would be painful from what I've read and it isn't?

I have lumps on the inside of my lower gums, had them many years. The dentist says they are normal and 'developmental'.

BentNeckLady · 09/03/2019 08:40

The absolute best thing you can do for health anxiety is end your relationship with google. Make a deal with yourself that you won’t do it and then don’t. I’ve been where you are and it’s bloody awful but it will get better if you stop feeding the fear BrewCake

See a dentist about your lump Smile

eggonmyface · 09/03/2019 08:44

Why don't I trust what the dentist has said?
It was suppose to reassure me and I still feel sick about it.
I had a cancer ten years ago. In the night last night I've managed to link the two and that's it I'm back to hell

OP posts:
hannah1992 · 09/03/2019 10:04

Did you ever have any counselling after you had cancer?

People have health anxiety without ever being ill. Myself included to a certain extent and I don't think the internet a d social media and adverts on the tv help matters either. Obviously the fact that you have been seriously ill is a factor in this.

It probably isn't a gland, it is most likely just tissue of some sort.

You could have had it for a long time but the fact you have only just noticed it means you are now hyper aware of it.

I'm sure if you go back to your dentist she will be happy to provide you with reassurance.

In the meantime, take yourself away from Google because you are just going to sit all day googling and feeding your anxiety and scaring yourself silly.

I speak from experience where googling is concerned

ShortandSweet96 · 09/03/2019 10:31

Long shot, but have you had a tooth removed in the last few months? If so it could be a very small fragment of loose bone from the extraction working it way to a surface, as your body is rejecting it.

If it looks like a white pimple like you would get on your face, is could be a sinus tract, this is due to an abscess. But your dentist would have pointed that out so more than likely blocked gland. Blocked glands aren't always sore, sometimes they can make your mouth feel a little drier as your saliva cannot pass through. They usually clear up on their own.

You've probably already said somewhere on the thread but when did this lump come up? And was it sudden or has it progressed over time?

Just by what you have described here I wouldn't be concerned.
