Anyone else become super sensitive to caffeine?

I’ve noticed if I drink a second cup or coffee even later in the day a couple hours later it makes me feel really funny. Like anxious and too much coffee feeling (even when it’s only a second cup and in the afternoon, several hours from my first cup!). I guess maybe my body can’t cope with caffeine well. As I get older it’s worse. I used to be able to drink two cups. The second cup would then make it more difficult at night to get to sleep (that’s how I knew I was sensitive to caffeine early on as it seems to stay in my system and have more effect on me then others).

Does anyone else get this feeling? It makes me feel awful like I’m getting a panic attack. I guess I’m going to have to give up coffee!!

This 100% happened to me. I drank coffee since I was a child and always loved it. About 3 years ago, when I was 43, I suddenly became completely intolerant to caffeine, seemingly overnight. It makes me anxious, panicky, and my heart beats out of my chest. It's awful. I no longer have caffeine in any form because it's just not worth it. My system can't handle it.

This is me. I now limit myself to one or two coffees per week. Otherwise I get edgy, shaky & sweaty & I can't sleep. Funnily enough I can tolerate tea, but not coffee.

My caffeine sensitivity increased massively when I had to follow a low carbohydrate diet. I went from ten cups of tea a day to one and even now if I have too many I feel awful. I only drink decaf coffee as that is even worse for me.

Yeah I've become increasingly sensitive - I now basically "know my limits" which is 1 tea and 1 coffee in the morning, and 1 tea in the afternoon.

If I drink coffee in the afternoon I get really tired (?!) then often can't get back to sleep if I wake in the night

Hey ho. Decaf is the way forward!

I've drunk de-caff for years now to try and prevent migraines. Occasionally I choose to have a full strength coffee and if I do I'm awake until 5/6am.

I cant drink it makes me nauseous . Have not drunk caffeine for about 18 years.

Desmondo2016 · 10/03/2019 23:44

I gave up all caffeinated drinks in 2012 and haven't looked back. On the odd occasion I accidentally consume one, I will know very quickly as I get very anxious and shaky or my sleep is majorly disrupted. A couole of years ago I was lying awake with my 'caffeine symptoms' trying to rack my brains as to what I had accidentally consumed and in the end worked it out to be a protein powder shake with green tea extract that I had drunk several hours earlier after the gym. That was when I KNEW I was massively sensitive and these days I'm really really careful to avoid it. I'm starting to think chocolate needs to go too :(

Me too. I gave up coffee as I had a panic attack once after my second cup. I used to drink cups of the stuff with no problems. It makes me feel really anxious and I associate the taste with anxiety now so only drink decaffinated tea and caffeine free Diet Coke. I had a bottle of Dr Pepper recently without thinking and it sent me scatty too.

I had this years ago and a friend told me to try drinking 100% arabica coffee because a lot of blends have robusta in them which is much stronger. Since then, I have only drunk 100% arabica coffee and been fine. If I risk a coffee at a coffee shop that can't tell me if it is arabica, I can usually tell within half an hour of drinking it - I get all jittery if it has the robusta in it.

I gave up coffee when I was pregnant. Now many years later if I have a cup I feel all spaced out and spmetimes nauseous so I hardly ever drink it. Weirdly though I don't get this with tea (and I don't drink decaf tea except in the evening).

PickAChew · 11/03/2019 00:36

Always been sensitive to it. It's a known genotype thing that some people can't tolerate it past midday.

Reallylongstory1 · 11/03/2019 00:39

Yes! I’ve given it up recently as I was drinking too much of it and after one week of headaches felt so much better. Also clearer skin and less bloating so definitely a positive for me.

I had to stop caffeine when The menopause hit.
