Anyone had an anorectal manometry?

And does it hurt?
I'm really fed up of all the bowel investigations but my doctor has arranged colonoscopy (normal), MRI proctogram (awaiting results but horrible and V uncomfortable and embarrassing) now I've got to book in for anorectal manometry and an anal ultrasound. Needless to say I don't want anymore poking around and want my bottom left alone. But know I've got to cooperate to get an understanding of what's wrong (suspect pelvic issues and evacuation disfunction whatever that is)

If you've had it, does it hurt, how long and does it require another sodding enema?

Thank you
A fed up Stirling

I've had one.. if it's what I'm thinking of... the basically shoved some sort of balloon up my bottom and inflated it until it felt like I urgently needed a poo. I have chronic bowel issues (and a wrecked pelvic floor after 4 children!) and it was to rule out Hirschprungs disease for my lack of ability to poo.
It was moderately uncomfortable but not horrible, and not half as embarrassing or undignified as I feared (and like you I have had a lot of people poking stuff up my backside!)
I don't recall needing an enema for it.
Hope that helps a bit :)

I still have no clear answers but rely on daily suppositories (and the odd enema) to have a poo at all, and have got used to it!

Thank you Stillmedusa, really appreciate your reply. Yes it does involve a balloon.
I'm tempted to give it a miss...

Went to see a specialist 6 weeks ago because I'd had regular constipation and resultant bleeding for months. I ended up following simple advice in a small book on the gut that I picked up from local health food shop which was to start day eating 1 green (I have red) apple and chew it extremely well and drink some warm water with it. I have a glass of warm water as soon as I wake up, then wait half an hour to have the apple.. I then wait for half an hour to have my breakfast which is now steel cut oats as I was still constipated on gluten free oats. Bit of linseed. Cook in hemp or coconut milk. No more constipation at all. And I'd been suffering on and off for a really long time.

I'm not bothering with the prunes, the phyllium husk etc anymore either. Worth a try?

I had one recently . Not a problem at all and the results confirmed that my muscle tone is dreadful and that fact coupled with a fragmented sphincter further up the bowel is what’s causing faecal incontinence .
I am waiting to hear about corrective surgery.
I would say it’s worth having as I tend sieve physio can improve things , I am passed that stage sadly Sad

Tend sieve = have heard

Yes I had one a few years ago, confirmed what my original diagnosis was..:Slow Transit Constipation....anything up to 2 weeks without going....it's pretty yuk. I was prescribed a Peristeen System for home colonics, it's marvellous :-)

Thank you everyone..
Sounds like it's useful for diagnosing.

I then wait for half an hour to have my breakfast which is now steel cut oats as I was still constipated on gluten free oats.

The only difference is that gluten free oats are certified as not contaminated (by other grains from the factory).

It probably just took a few days to work.

(Not your main point but it might help to know that.)
