Hernia & Divarication (Diastasis) after having children

Hi all!

I've got a para-umbilical hernia and divarication recti after having 2 kids.

Looking now into treatment options and surgeons.
Been told by 1 Dr that only hernia needs to be surgically repaired while divarication is to be left alone (1 day at the hospital; possibly with local anaesthesia).

Others want to jump in with full abdominal wall repair (7 days at the hospital!) including plastic tummy tuck surgery - while I am slim and do not have fat or stretch marks on my waist, just a bit of extra skin.
I am getting anxious having read about problems with hernia mesh and re-occurences.

Also concerned how to safely recover from a surgery with a 10m.o. baby.

Re doctors: I am considering the British Hernia Unit; Oliver Warren & Arjun SHankar at Lister Hospital; and Martin Kurzer at HJE.

Any experiences / advice?

Thanks!

I too have para-umbilical hernia and do have Diastisis recti after two kids.
I have had US that confirmed a 1cm hernia and awaiting mesh repair. I have improved the diastisis with yoga so just having the hernia repair as this has been more painful as a result of the yoga.

I was really hoping it would be repaired laparoscopicly and feel v anxious about the op!

I have an umbilical hernia around 1cm in size after just one baby! I’m having a mayo repair later this year and waiting 6 months plus before TTC baby number 2. I absolutely refused mesh repair as I do not want that material in my body.

I had my epigastric hernia repair done by Martin Kurzer at st JE - I remember the name.
I have not had my diastasis repaired which is much bigger surgery.
It was a very straightforward procedure. In and out on the day. The hernia repair has stayed solid - it's about 4 or 5 years on now.
The immediate recovery was fine - I was up and about straight away, with pain relief.
It has not been a completely smooth ride - I did have some occasional pain and discomfort for some months afterwards, especially after eating a large meal. But better than the pain from the hernia popping out.
I have ongoing chronic abdominal muscle spasms which can be painful but it's not due to the hernia surgery, it's of unknown cause really but possibly due to the general strain or damage to my muscles due to the diastasis.
