Blocked ears

Can anyone help me? My ears are full of hardened wax and I'm struggling to hear.

Been to the drs who gave me ear drops that have made no difference.

Am willing to try anything just to be able to hear properly Sad

Where are you based?
I struggled with this for years, it's awful not being able to hear. I went to Hearology - a clinic in London Bridge that do ear suctioning rather than the syringing you get done at the GP.
Best £60 I have ever spent, walked out of there with perfect hearing again and still perfect now 8 months later! I'm sure there are similar clinics based outside of London too.

I had this last year and it was awful. In the end I booked a next day appointment at Specsavers with their audiologist and the wax was sucked out - instant relief! It cost £35, but was totally worth every penny.

Lovabug · 28/02/2019 22:20

Mine was £35 per ear - I only needed the one ear going.

fabulous01 · 28/02/2019 22:21

Olive oil in ear usually works for me

bellsbuss · 28/02/2019 22:22

You definitely need to go to an audiologist, the drops didn't work for me either but by using them it makes it easier when having the wax sucked out

GiantKitten · 28/02/2019 22:25

Otex cleared mine pretty well after a couple of weeks. It can be very satisfying feeling a chunk of wax working its way out Smile

DD2 went suddenly deaf with it though, & couldn’t really function, so she paid for microsuction (?) which I think was about £60 for both ears.

Depends how badly you’re affected I think.

greenelephantscarf · 28/02/2019 22:29

look up a clear ear clinic in your area for microsuction.
it's magic.
privare, but those 50£ are the best money spent.
usually those places have a drop in clinic. they will have a good look into your ear as well and can refer you if needed,

ozymandiusking · 28/02/2019 22:33

I can recommend ear suction as well. Immediate relief.

legolimb · 28/02/2019 22:36

DH has very waxy ears and they need clearing out annually.

The GP no longer does syringing. They just tell you to use oil/drops for 4 weeks and if no improvement they will refer to audiology at the hospital.

DH's ears get even more blocked if he does that - so he pays privately for them suctioning. It's £70 - and the guy does a very good job. Takes a before and after photo of the inside of his ears.

There will likely be someone in your area who does this - google it.

januaryfirst · 01/03/2019 06:54

Thanks everyone. I will try the olive oil first. How long do I need to do them before I feel any improvement?

OP posts:
Lovabug · 01/03/2019 12:56

I was told to use olive oil for a week. I also tried otex, but there was no improvement. When I was seen by the audiologist at specsavers, he said there was a lot of liquid in my ear - probably the otex 🙈. He managed to see the wax eventually and did remove it by suction.

Comefromaway · 01/03/2019 13:00

We were told you need to use the olive oil for at least two weeks before suction to soften the wax and avoid the ear drum perforating.

greenelephantscarf · 01/03/2019 13:09

no need to do anything for suction. in fact it's safer if you don't put anything into your ear.

Lovabug · 01/03/2019 14:19

I would go straight for the suction - you'll get immediate relief.

mathanxiety · 01/03/2019 20:44

Just go and get suctioned. I take DD3 once s year for irrigation and that works well but it takes a solid 15 minutes each time.

YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch · 01/03/2019 20:50

I'm currently lay on my side with an ear full of Earex drops, it tickles so bad!

I've had my ears syringed about 4 times in 5 years and have an appointment for it again in a couple of weeks, I can't afford to pay for them to be auctioned otherwise I would!

januaryfirst · 01/03/2019 21:00

I looked up my nearest audiologists and they charge £70. I can't afford that at the moment.

OP posts:
Hoppahouse · 01/03/2019 22:03

Do you need both ears doing?
Ring specsavers - it cost me £35 with the audiologist there - I was really desperate at that point and it was totally worth the money in the end. I hope you can get sorted.

Nquartz · 01/03/2019 22:08

When you are in the shower tilt your head so the water goes on your esrs, so it regularly & it keeps the was at bay.
