Liver function tests

Hi just wondering if anyone could help interpret these blood results? How serious are they and what could they indicate?

I was told by receptionist they're normal and no further action needed, I picked up a copy to check something else and noticed that some of the liver function tests are marked high. Dr mentioned that last lost were high too and would need to be redone. I didn't really question it then as I was seeing her about something unrelated to liver, but I'm wondering now why they've told me 'normal' over the phone?

Serum bilirubin 21 (

They have told you normal because the GP has looked at them and been satisfied that there is no issue. They should have said 'they were fine', 'the doctor was happy with them' or 'there's no action needed' really.

Liver function tests can be affected by so many things such as viral infections, food and drink and do fluctuate. Even though one result is 51 the range is up to 50 so really that's absolutely fine. The test look ok as far as I know. The GP checks all blood results and will write a note on them for the receptionist to tell you when you call.

(although I'm not expert. Just had liver function tests during pregnancy and was told that and am a nurse so have some knowledge re ranges of blood tests!)

Ok well I am not a clinician so I can't speak about your results at all as I don't know what they mean for you.

But in general terms, a GP only signs off tests as ok once they have considered all the results in the context of your own medical history.

They would be happy for you to book an appointment or telephone appointment with them if you want clarification.

Once you hit late 30s, it's surprisingly rare for people's bloods all to be in range. Ranges even vary between countries.

Yours are so, so slightly out of range...some can be literally hundreds of points higher with various issues.

The only one I know is bilirubin, both mine & dd’s were 24 in recent bloods and they said that was borderline and not an issue at all.

At my next blood test a month later mine was back down to 14, so I guess can fluctuate.

Thanks for replying girlinthegarden. I’m suffering a lot of anxiety at the moment due to some other health issues so I’m maybe overthinking it. I will make an appointment to discuss with the dr.

I know some liver tests can indicate muscle damage (alt in particular) but not sure if the other two would be raised with this, does anyone know? The condition I’m currently having symptoms of and stressing over causes muscle damage, so that’s why I’m panicking a little.

Docs don't generally worry about ALT until it's a lot higher than that (3x) or you have other symptoms.

If your doc says you're ok, I'd be reassured that you're ok!

jinglebellmel · 27/02/2019 16:32

Thanks jaxhog that reassured me a little

To reassure further, I've personally had ALTs over 200 for a very mild and temporary liver condition.
