Gastro oesophageal reflux and diet?

Hi I'm looking for advice about GORD and diet and whether it helps with reflux
I just been been diagnosed with Gastro oesophageal reflux -GORD and inflammation in my oesophagus and and been put on omaprazole I go back in 4 weeks and see how it’s going. The advice I got from the hospital is to eat little and often and avoid spicy and acidic foods. Oh, and to try to lose weight - which I definitely need to do!!

I want to try to manage this as far as possible by diet although I’ll take the medication for the four week period and see how I'm doing then. I’ve been looking at diets and eating plans til they’re coming out my ears! I think I prefer a Mediterranean/ low carb/anti inflammatory type approach.

Has anyone got any experience of diet helping with GORD and can give me some advise please

Well for me a low carb diet helped enormously, as high carb (and therefore hidden sugar) is very inflammatory. I'd say try it and see, I found it has other health benefits too, good for weight loss, lowers blood sugars, and some people find it helps with arthritis. I've been eating low carb for three years now, and wouldn't change back.

Thanks for replying
@NanTheWiser Sorry I didn't notice your reply that's really useful I've begun to feel better after a few days of Omeprazole and cutting out carb and processed rubbish and eating smaller meals. Do you follow a particular book or LC approach?

@Pyra thanks I'll look it up. It's the kick up the rear I needed, I think😀 I'd got diagnosed by my dentist inflammatory gum disease a few month ago and I wonder if that and GORD are both related to inflammation from acidic foods and carbs

nellyitsme I don't use a book, but have read a great deal on the Diabetes.UK forum where very many diabetics choose low carb to reduce their blood glucose. I'm not diabetic although was on the verge of being pre-diabetic a few years ago, and had a few odd symptoms (not to mention being rather overweight) and because of the acid reflux, decided to try low carb eating.
I was really pleased to find my weight dropping slowly but surely (24lbs altogether) and had increased energy, so for me there is no downside.
Like Pyra, I have plateaued now, although a few more pounds wouldn't go amiss.
While Omeprazole can be useful to get on top of symptoms, it doesn't address the underlying cause, and should only be a short term measure, and beware of "acid rebound" when you stop - best to taper the dosage when you decide to stop taking it.
I believe you are on GN? There is an excellent low carb sub-forum there (as there is on MN too), where you will find lots of useful info.

@NanTheWiser yes that's me on GN 😀 I'll look up the low carb forum.

I don't want to be on pills for the rest of my life if I can help it although the Omeprazole are starting to make a difference. I've read about people who through making lifestyle changes don't need the pills or just have them just in case. I'm going try my best

@nellyitsme, a really good source of info is this one: www.dietdoctor.com, it's the low-carber's bible, with lots of ideas.
