Is it normal to suffer depression after a serious health scare?

I should be relieved & thankful, but 4 months on from being discharged ( I was being monitored for the possibility of cancer ) I’m certain im suffering from PTSD.

Is this normal?

Yes, totally normal, and I'm so sorry that you've had to go through so much already. Sometimes the mind takes longer to catch up and process what has happened, and what could have happened. Here is the page from MIND which explains it all better than I can. Please do go and tell your GP, if they're any good at all they'll be nothing but sympathetic and helpful, this is really common, and you will get there. All the best to you.

You're welcome Randomposter, and I hope things get better for you, and you get the help you need. The mind needs just as much care as the body, whether it's PTSD, depression or whatever - put yourself in the hands of people who can help you, because you are a worthwhile person who deserves help and care, and people, including your doctor, friends and family, are waiting to give it to you if you only let them know. All the best x

Yes very normal. You have been through a lot. The same thing happened to me. Took me a while to dig myself out of a hole after waking up blind in one eye. What happened to me was life changing and could have been even worse. I needed therapy afterwards. Speak to your GP.

Yes I had a huge emotional outpouring after a horrific illness. Very normal.

Yes, not so much the depression in my case but PTSD and crippling health anxiety. CBT really helped me and EMDR to process in terms of the PTSD.

It can happen. I went through lots of cancer tests last year, an operation and few hospitals stays. I don't feel depressed but do feel anxious that I still don't have a proper answer, they just get rid of you when negative for cancer and leave you still very ill.
