Hypothyroidism symptoms?

helpamummaout · 26/02/2019 20:36

Please could you tell me what your hypothyroidism symptoms were please.
I'm ticking off quite a few of the symptoms I've read online but not sure if it's enough to warrant a blood test so would just be interesting to see what other people's experiences were. Thank you

Been diagnosed 14 years now.
Tiredness, feeling the cold and weight gain.

Lemondrizzzzle · 26/02/2019 20:42

Fatigue is the main symptom that I notice when my thyroxine levels are low.
My initial symptoms before diagnosis were fatigue, weight gain, low mood, feeling the cold and my periods became very irregular.

helpamummaout · 26/02/2019 20:46

I had twins 14 months ago, I only gained 2 stone in the pregnancy, and weighed less after I had them than pre pregnancy. But piled it all on since, started slimming world in sept and I have lost 1 1/2 stone since September but losses have become really hard to achieve lately.
I have dry brittle knotty hair, brittle nails (both unusual for me)
Itchy skin, eczema
No libido what so ever.
Low mood
Irregular periods
Feel really exhausted all the time even when I get 8 hours sleep a night.
Think I've got the main ones written down there.
Thanks for your replies it's interesting to know x

Depression, struggle to lose weight, low heart rate, dry nails, dry hair, very dry skin (but I also have eczema) and crushing fatigue and brain fog

helpamummaout · 26/02/2019 21:58

This may sound odd but did any of you guys suffer with hive like rashes?

OP posts:
Lily715 · 26/02/2019 22:34

I had brittle nails too, forgot to say. No rashes. Have you booked in for a blood test?

Lily715 · 26/02/2019 22:35

Sorry, just re-read your OP. Think a blood test would be a good idea though.

Violetroselily · 26/02/2019 22:42

I've had various types of rash but I've had skin problems my whole life so I dont think its connected.

helpamummaout · 27/02/2019 06:43

I'm going to nip on and make an appointment today. I was googling last night and seems some people do get this hive like rash with it. So be interesting to see. I have always had eczema but it's so bad at the minute. My hair literally gets matted when I wash it because it's so coarse and brittle. Just want to know what's going on, hope I don't get fobbed off.

not Pooing
Brittle nails
Sluggish
Feeling cold

Your body is slowing down as not enough hormones, thus slow heart rate, weight loss slow

No rashes though

helpamummaout · 27/02/2019 07:23

What would you class as a slow heart rate? My resting heart rate is 54 according to my fitbit

Under 60 is considered low unless you are an athlete?

ivykaty44 · 27/02/2019 07:33

Are you wearing a heart rate strap across your chest to get the reading? The straps are really good but if it’s a bracelet style they can often be inaccurate unfortunately, this was what the consultant told me

helpamummaout · 27/02/2019 07:35

I'm far from an athlete lol, I walk the dog and do home work outs to try shift this weight but that's it

OP posts:
helpamummaout · 27/02/2019 07:35

No i just have a bracelet one, it's only something I've picked up in since yesterday after looking at symptoms

Thing is - what was your heart rate last year? Or 5tears ago?

Everyone is different, I have a friend who’s heart rate runs about 55 bpm and she’s no athlete- and not hypo either. The 60bpm is just a range but doesn’t fit all and you may run under or over by a bit

digerd · 27/02/2019 08:34

My sis had no periods at all after her 2nd child was born and the only other symptom she noticed was dry skin on her hands. When diagnosed she was told she was very underactive.

I went from over to underactive when overdosed with Carbimazole. I swelled like a balloon gaining 2 stone in 10 weeks, agonising muscle cramps , thinning hair and slurring my speech. That was decades ago and was never told my heart rate etc.
I also advise you to see GP for a Thyroid function test. Good luck.

RisingLikeAPhoenix · 27/02/2019 08:47

In answer to question of a PP. I suffered severe urticaria before my under active thyroid was diagnosed. It was debilitating because my whole body would be covered and my face would swell up. I sometimes sat for hours in cool baths to try and relieve it and had to take high doses of antihistamines to try to control it. I was sent to various specialists and no one had any idea what was causing it - it was only years after my hypothyroidism diagnosis that I found out that it can be a symptom. I was young and I don’t think they even thought about thyroid until I became more and more unwell.

helpamummaout · 27/02/2019 09:23

Before I had the twins it used to be in the high 60's. Will keep you all posted thanks for your advice

When I was diagnosed (blood test for unrelated issue) my TSH was 21 and the doctor said “didn’t you feel tired?” I thought it was normal to want to go to bed at 7pm if you were working sixty hour weeks. Apparently not. Controversially I run hot, not cold. A couple of months before diagnosis I had the weirdest numbness/tingling in my hands that coincided with overwhelming exhaustion. I’d taken the day off work and felt pathetic. It only made sense after I knew.

Foodylicious · 27/02/2019 09:46

They will likely check a few things.
Heamaglobin, ferritin, folate and vit d too.
Low levels of them can make you feel pretty rubbish.

villageshop · 27/02/2019 10:06

Constipation
Crushing painful headaches
Awful tiredness
Slow mental though process (ie being thick whereas I used to be quite switched on)
Dry skin, nails, hair
Cold all the time
Sleeping a lot
Heavy flooding painful periods
Weight gain
Looking generally fat and puffy compared to what I used to look like (lean and slim)
No energy for anything much, yet not really bothered about it.

swingofthings · 27/02/2019 10:10

Just to comment on this, my GP also these were unreliable but I ended up under the care of a cardiologist and had a hospital heartrate monitor fitted for 5 days and the readings totally confirmed the fitbit readings. The consultant was actually laughing they should just get their patient to wear these rather than the intrusive piece of equipment they supply.

ivykaty44 · 27/02/2019 22:04

Obviously different consultants have different views swingifthings

helpamummaout · 04/03/2019 11:18
