DP issues with throat / mouth / teeth constantly

My DP seems to have issues with his mouth constantly, since I have known him (6+ years) he always has a sore throat, mouth and throat ulcers, swollen tonsils and bad breath that comes and goes. Now his teeth have started getting really discoloured and I can't lie I am finding it increasingly off putting.

He eats a fairly normal diet, although high on sugar I'd say and he does drink a LOT of fruit juice. He brushes his teeth with an electric toothbrush every morning and night and uses mouthwash.

I just wondered if anyone had any ideas? He's seen doctors and dentists who always just tell him to use bonjella, but it must be some kind of underlying issue.

Has he tried cutting down on the juice which full of sugars and acids which would irritate an already sore mouth?Stop using mouthwash as it dries out the mouth also.Celiac disease can sometimes cause mouth sores and gum discomfort. ,maybe get tested if dosnt clear up by changing diet.

I’ve heard cutting out dairy can help with mouth ulsers

He might have candida, a systemic fungal infection that would affect all those areas and won't shift unless he follows a thorough protocol. Mouthwash and bonjela wouldn't even begin to touch it. His high sugar diet would be a big risk factor for candida too. Do you know whether he has taken lots of antibiotics during his lifetime? Does he have gut issues that you know of? Is he prone to thrush at all?

Google candida and have a think. I'm sorry to hear that it's affecting your relationship but it would be very understandable. Read some of the anecdotal accounts online of people's experiences with candida and you may find it very helpful. Best of luck. One big first step he could take would be to start using a decent probiotic, and I'm not talking yakult, but proper multi-strain probiotics in capsule or tablet form.

This is really interesting info, thank you.

@Fluffypot333 Yes, he has cut down massively on the sugar-y drinks lately. I'm not sure if maybe the damage is already done in a way? as it doesn't seem to have helped.

@reenchantmentofeverydaylife Thank you for this. I have read about candida overgrowth before as I suspect I suffer from it from time to time. My DP has only ever had thrush once as far as I know, he's also suffered from a UTI in the past. He hasn't had many courses of antibiotics either really, one or two in the past 5-6 years. I think I will look into probiotics and see if I can convince him to try them.

He should see a GP. Recurrent mouth ulcers can be an indication of other underlying heath problems, it’s worth getting checked out.

I wouldn't to assume but I'm wondering if it's anything to do with inflammation in his body. I was diagnosed with gum inflammatory disease by my dental hygienist- and through daily use of those little interdental brushes - a bit like tiny bottle brushes I've cleared it up massively. But I've also been diagnosed with gastro oesophageal reflux and inflammation. I'm sure the two must be connected so I be changed my diet to a Mediterranean style one cut out bread sugar and carbs and overly processed foods. Look up inflammation and anti inflammatory foods etc
Also mouthwashes can make these things worse - and stain your teeth.
Ps I am prone to Candida too I'm packing in the live yogurt and kefir drink - check out the clever guts website too

Thanks @FaithInfinity he has seen his GP about the ulcers on multiple occasions but he always just gets told to put bonjella on them! Even though they are in his throat, or on his dangly bit (name escapes me)

The diet issue is difficult because he's had a food phobia problem since he was little, there are only a few foods he will actually eat and most of those are sugary / carby. I think I need to speak to him and see if I can get him to see a nutritionalist or something.
