Other kids making comments about DD's very hairy legs (yes they are unfortunately). She doesn't want to wear skirts or leggings.

What can we do apart from shave them? I appreciate she is very young but I don't want her to be unhappy with herself.

My friends dd has very hairy legs and so she immacs them for her.

Piksiminx · 06/07/2007 14:46

My DD, although 4 yrs older than yours has always had dark hairy legs, she has just started to use a hair removal cream that is strawberry scented and is made by Nair, she thinks that it's fab.

frogs · 06/07/2007 14:47

Dd1 has this. She's now 12 and I help her wax her legs.

Spell out the options for her:

(1) face out the stupid comments from other kids;
(2) Wear trousers or tights;
(3) Use some form of hair removal.

I don't think 9 is too young to be depilating, but she needs to make the decision herself.

Girls with extremely hairy legs runs in both my family and dh's. My dd started getting visible black hair on her legs (and back) by the time she was 2. I started very early telling her how only the most beautiful girls had hair on their legs and that she was very lucky to have hairy legs. I said that when she was older people would be jealous of how beautiful she was and of teh hair on her legs. I repeat this often. I am hoping that when she is older (she is 4.5 now) it will help her with the teasing.

NoodleStroodle · 06/07/2007 15:02

How old is she second hand?

NoodleStroodle · 06/07/2007 15:05

Sorry I will read the title of the thread

I would really really avoid shaving them because they are likely to grow back thicker and coarser. Do you think she could have them waxed as a "grown up" - explain it will tingle but no pain no gain. Do you think she would manage an epilator - I have one and to begin with it was painful but now my legs just see it and the hair falls out!

My DD (10) also has dark hairy legs although it has not be an issue yet - but her eyebrows soon will be

Have dug out some Nair mousse from the back of the cupboard - usually use it on DH's back before we go on holiday! She is keen for me to do it so we will have a go later on.

I don't want her to be ridiculed if there is a simple solution.

Perhaps you can turn it into a sort of pampering session - maybe paint her toes too - just so it's a grown up womanly thing rather than a stopping being ridiculed at school thing IYSWIM. Let her paint your toes. Have a glass of wine whilst she has juice with cocktail umbrella...Try to turn this into a positive.

I think being girly but matter-of-fact about it is key. Dd1's hairs are blonde, but there are a lot, so we've had several years worth of discussion about what she wants to do, and this year is the first year she's actually decided to go the hair-removal route.

It's also worth constantly repeating that all women have things that they don't like about their bodies, and that hairy legs are one of the easiest things to fix.

SecondhandRose · 06/07/2007 21:00

It is done. 9 minutes and then she sat on the draining board while I scrubbed them all down the plug hole afterwards. She was amazed and so pleased.

My Mum looked at them today whilst they were still very hairy and apologised to her and said 'I'm sorry I think you've got them from me!'.

morningpaper · 06/07/2007 21:17

SecondhandRose · 07/07/2007 09:08
