Run out of Inhaler

Morning all,

I've had asthma for years and I'm usually really good at being on top of my medication. I've just moved to a new part of the city I live in and haven't had a chance to register with the GP yet, my asthma has generally been pretty good this past week but I struggled this weekend as my SO and I spent the weekend in his mum's house which is really damp and awful.

I phoned up my old GP this morning and explained the situation to them and asked if they could possibly fax over an emergency prescription to my new local pharmacy. They refused and didn't provide me with any options.

When I last needed an emergency prescription from them, the receptionist laughed in my face and scolded me for not having done it sooner and then told me they couldn't help me so I ended up having to complain to the practice manager. I don't want to go through this process again. Is there anyway I can get an emergency inhaler from my local pharmacy?

Which one is it? I think you can get salbutamol over the counter in some pharmacies.

StillRunningWithScissors · 25/02/2019 08:48

I believe you can buy inhalers over the counter.

Yes, but it does have to be an emergency I believe, ie that you need it immediately. They can't hand it out just because you've run out and might need it. Have you ordered a prescription from your GP - how long do they usually take?

MissDai5y · 25/02/2019 09:05

You can do an online consultation with Lloyds pharmacy for a ventolin. Possibly the presenters as well.

It's more expensive than an nhs prescription but worth it in a pinch when you might run out before you can get another prescription.

MissDai5y · 25/02/2019 09:05

Sorry, preventers, not presenters

LIZS · 25/02/2019 09:06

Can you order a repeat online via your old gp and collect from a pharmacy nearer where you are living.

monkeytoad35 · 25/02/2019 11:26

Go to a local GP surgery near to where you now live and say you are visiting the area and need to see a doctor that way you'll get a prescription.

Disney2 · 25/02/2019 11:28

You can get it online via Llyods online doctor, £24 for two ventolin inhalers. I use it to have an extra one in the house if I ever misplace mine.

TeaforTwoBiscuitOrThree · 25/02/2019 11:37

Yep, you can get them from pharmacy without prescription, at least the Ventolin ones

mangolover · 25/02/2019 11:43

You need to register with a new GP today.

PCohle · 25/02/2019 11:48

The ability of doctors and pharmacies to prescribe medications in an emergency requires you to need the medicine immediately. Not just for it to be inconvenient for you to get a prescription.

Buying one over the counter or getting a doctor's appointment are likely to be better options.

PeterPiperPickedWrong · 25/02/2019 11:58

Call a local surgery. Tell them you need an immediate prescription, they will be able to register you straight away but you do need to take identification / photo Id plus utility bill to register as a patient.
If they refuse or are awkward ask to be put on the duty drs call list so you can at least speak to someone.

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 25/02/2019 12:00

You can buy them in Asda.

PhilomenaButterfly · 25/02/2019 12:03

You can buy salbutamol over the counter, I've had to do it for XH before.

MigGril · 25/02/2019 12:15

Luckly you can now buy inhaler over the counter. So hopefully a pharmacy will be able to help you. If not then try what other have suggested by registering with a new GP.

Your old GP practices is awful and very irresponsible asthma is a very serious condition and should be taken seriously.

susan82 · 25/02/2019 14:30

Sorry if this has been previously mentioned but until you can register with a new GP, try a local walk in centre or 111?
