Dermoid cyst???

Hi,
I see there are a few old posts on here about Dermoid Cysts. I had a scan a few weeks ago that found a 10cm ‘mass’ covering my right ovary.
The sonography suspects a dermoid cyst but I have to have further blood tests and an MRI to see whether cancer is suspected. I am beside myself with worry!
Wondered if anyone has had something similar?

I had a ultrasound following some discomfort and was told I had an ovarian cyst. Had an MRI only to be told that actually the cyst isn't attached to the ovary....so now have to have a CT scan to see if they can work out what the cyst is....they have mentioned either a mucocele cyst or a mesenteric one. My consultant seemed quite excited. Hmm. The MRI mentioned the possibility of cancer but I've already had the blood tests for that and it came back fine........ Getting bored with it all now. Now off to Google a dermoid cyst

Frenchy80 · 27/02/2019 08:03

Hi toomuchgoingon,
I hope they get to the bottom of it soon.
I assume your consultant was excited because they are rare cysts you might have?
I had my MRI yesterday- not an experience I particularly enjoyed!
Hoping they will continue to suspect a dermoid cyst! My ultrasound didn’t say where mine came from either - it was completely covering my right ovary.

I hopefully to find out next week.....it will be interesting to see yet another view of the flaming thing.

Having had an MRI before, I keep my eyes fully shut all the way through. Makes me claustrophobic. Hope you get your results soon

Littlefish · 28/02/2019 22:05

I had a grapefruit sized dermoid cyst completely wrapping my left ovary. It was discovered by accident when I was having a completely different laparoscopic procedure. The surgeon removed the cyst, my ovary and my fallopian tube.

Frenchy80 · 28/02/2019 22:54

I accidentally opened my eyes part way through - not realising I was completely inside the scanner - completely freaked me out!

I was diagnosed with a suspected dermoid about 7cm on right ovary during my 20 week pregnancy scan last year. I was very shocked and scared as if it twisted I would have been in a lot of pain and it would have required immediate intervention which I didn’t want before my baby was born.
In the end I had a c-section and the cyst was removed at the same time. The baby was fine, my ovary was saved and the cyst was weird and filled sebaceous jelly stuff but totally benign.
I had no idea I had it but I’m glad it’s gone now. I hope that reassures you x

FAE18 · 03/03/2019 01:08

Also just to mention that until it was removed the doctor also wondered if it might possibly have been an endometrioma or ‘chocolate cyst’ which is a blood filled cyst and a form of endometriosis

Spudina · 03/03/2019 01:10

I had a 5cm dermoid cyst removed. The operation was fine. Some of them grow teeth and hair!! Mine hadn't. My boss was disappointed, there was talk of it being our team mascot, kept in a jar on the desk. I've since gone on to have 2DDs. They are benign and nothing to worry about OP.

Frenchy80 · 03/03/2019 07:30

Thank you for those posts. I just can’t stop worrying in case it isn’t a dermoid.
I’m currently waiting on MRI results and blood results. Had a missed call from a ‘no caller ID’ on Friday and I’m convinced it was the hospital with bad news as it’s soon soon after my MRI. Don’t know whether it’s normal to be as anxious as I am!

OP posts:
FAE18 · 03/03/2019 09:13

Firstly if it was the hospital they would have left you a voicemail with a number to call back on xx
Secondly it is normal to worry. I read so many things, I googled doctors research papers and everything but in the end cysts are very very common and most are nothing to worry about long term.
Have you had an internal sonogram? My doctor assessed mine that way as I was pregnant and couldn’t have an MRI. You should get reassurance soon and you’ll be able to look forward to this being all sorted x

Frenchy80 · 03/03/2019 09:37

Thank you - yes had an internal ultrasound with us how they found it. The sonographer thinks dermoid but obviously MRI is more detailed. I have had a normal ca125 result but awaiting other ‘Tumor marker results. I have definitely read too much online! Mine is a pretty solid ‘mass’ which worries me but they think that it doesn’t have a blood supply! Horrid knowing something is there but not what it is.
Thanks for your reassurance x

I was rushed into hospital 3 weeks ago with horrendous stomach pains, worse than childbirth. Eventually diagnosed after 2 days with a 12 x 7 cm dermoid cyst. I had an ultrasound and a CT scan, so only my stomach area was scanned. It had twisted which was the reason for the pain, I had an ovary, the cyst and both tubes removed by keyhole surgery, I feel amazing now!! I did have symptoms for a while but put them down to my age. I now realise I was bloated all over, even my legs are thinner, my clothes are now too big, having been extremely tight. I was tired, being clumsy, had a weird feeling in my bladder and had bowel changes. Have you got any other symptoms?

OhTheDramz · 03/03/2019 09:52

I had a dermoid, 7cm, removed uncomplicatedly. Had an issue with recovery but not something that will happen to you. It was full of hair!

Meandyouandyouandme · 03/03/2019 10:10

Yes mine had a hairball the size of a strawberry Shock

Frenchy80 · 03/03/2019 10:17

Are these relatively common then?
Yes - have had other symptoms which I’d not really noticed until I knew something was there. I’ve had some bloating, pain in my back - a sciatica- type pain. Think I’ve been a bit clumsy too. Interesting that you were bloated all over!

I was naturally worried when the sonographer found it. My Mum had died from ovarian cancer so I freaked out a bit, as she was finding what I thought was my worst fear realised. But sonographers are really well trained. If they are telling you it's a dermoid cyst, that's almost certainly what it is OP.

Wond3rment · 03/03/2019 10:27

I had a Dermiod Cyst removed a couple of years ago. My consultant explained that it was one of those procedures that makes his job exciting - glad I could obilige.

It was 20cm in diameter with a tooth and hair that the nurse unrolled 🤮 and combed out to record on video, it was 76cm in length. Beyond gross in my opinion but the surgical team loved it.

Unfortunately the procedure was a little complicated, it was a planned keyhole surgery but ended up being open surgery due to its size and hard content. The surgery was 4.5 hrs in total, ovary was also removed. I had a full recovery.

Best of luck to you.

Frenchy80 · 03/03/2019 10:28

Hair ball the size of a strawberry!!

OP posts:
Frenchy80 · 03/03/2019 10:30

Combed out the hair! These things are really grotesque!

OP posts:
Frenchy80 · 03/03/2019 10:31

Can’t believe they had planned keyhole when it was 20cm!

OP posts:
Frenchy80 · 03/03/2019 10:33

Spudina - sorry to hear about your mum. I can understand why you’d think the worst too.
I hope my sonographer got it right!! The consultant didn’t seem too interested in the scan report but I guess that’s because they don’t see the images like the sonographer does - they just get the written report.

OP posts:
Wond3rment · 03/03/2019 10:38

In hindsight, I wonder that too.

Meandyouandyouandme · 03/03/2019 10:55

My consultant said mine was impressive! He had my daughter feeling my tummy to show her! She is 25 so that wasn’t too weird. There was a chance I’d have had open surgery if it was much bigger, they managed to squeeze it out my tummy button, they put it in a bag before cutting to ensure none of the contents got left behind Envy not envy.
Yes, I wore a dress yesterday that I wore 3 weeks ago and it’s obviously loose around my stomach, but was also loose around my chest. My bras are looser and my skinny jeans, I thought it was middle aged spread, as I’ve been eating loads of crap, my appetite has been completely non existent since! Think I was feeding it, I call it my gremlin Shock

Frenchy80 · 03/03/2019 14:56

Had been thinking mine was middle age spread too - I’ve always been slim around my middle (carry weight on bum and thighs!) but didn’t imagine there to be a 10cm ‘mass’ growing in there!

I think a lot of my anxiety is because it has all been such a shock!!

It certainly does sound like a gremlin!
