I’m 51 and had a Mirena fitted 2 weeks ago. Since then I have had light spotting everyday. It started brown, went pinky red for a week and is now brown again more like discharge than actual bleeding.
Could this mean it is tailing off now?
It’s not heavy and is worse in the mornings and often goes away completely by the evenings.
I am just hoping there is some end in sight here!
Thanks 🙂

I'm 28 - I had a Mirena fitted in November - I spotted on and off for about three weeks afterward - very light - but definitely there - I had a sort of mini period - 3 days and light - about 6 weeks later - then didn't have a period at all until last week - also very very light lasted 5 days and more pinkish/brownish discharge (sorry tmi) then anything else - no cramps either.
I hope it gets better for you.

Justmuddlingalong · 22/02/2019 14:28

I had the spotting every day. Until I had it removed after 11 months. It obviously didn't work for me but I hope it settles down soon for you.

SandraTheBee · 22/02/2019 14:37

I know it can be really bad for some people.
I am holding onto the fact that it IS getting a bit lighter each day and is not longer red, but old brown blood.
Not actually sure there's much point using it as contraception at my age, but i really don't want to take the risk and like the idea of maybe having no periods- eventually.

It's the progesterone thinning the lining of your uterus, this happens in most cases but varies greatly in length of time, some women who already had a thin lining will probably only bleed or spot for a short time where if your a bit older (myself included) chances are your lining is thicker. My advice is bear with it the mirena has been a godsend for me, got it at 46 for heavy peri periods and have been totally period free for 3 years.

SandraTheBee · 22/02/2019 20:20

Thank you rosie. I am really hopping so. You hear horror stories of course. Now there is no spotting at all but i’m Sure it will start up again in the morning. A little less each daySmile

I had a Mirena fitted, three years ago, at the time I was nearly 53 and one year post memo, I spotted every day for 4.5 months, I am pleased I persevered as it has enabled me to use systemic HRT and I have had no problems with the Mirena since spotting stopped.

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 22/02/2019 21:05

Post memo not memo!

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 22/02/2019 21:05

I give up, I am sure you know what I mean!

whatisforteamum · 22/02/2019 22:29

I had spotting.Bear with it.Honestly the last 10 years period free and good contraception.A few odd symptoms were well worth it.😀

Joebloggswazere · 22/02/2019 22:42

My period definitely changed colour after the Mirena coil. I didn’t have spotting but each period is very light and dark brown with bits (sorry for tmi). My period before the coil was so heavy and very red so I was a bit worried at first too.

Meet0nTheledge · 22/02/2019 22:47

I'm on my second. I had a lot of spotting in the first few months but since then, virtually nothing (by which I mean spotting for about 2 days a year). Previously my periods were very heavy, so its been a total lifechanger for me.

SandraTheBee · 23/02/2019 07:55

These are all so encouraging and helpful thank you!
Even at 51 my periods were still monthly- but they were always short and light.
I had heard about the Mirena being used as part of HRT when I had it fitted.
I tried the tablets a couple of years back. The oestrogen weeks were great, the progesterone ones awful so I stopped.
I might discuss trying some oestrogen with the dr to balance it all out.
I do really like the idea of being pretty much period free now until i’m Out the other side!

I've had the mirena for the last 15 years, obviously not the same one. After the initial spotting I've not had a period. It's brill.

shinyNewPound · 23/02/2019 10:06

It took 9 months for mine to settle down. I also had dull aches during that time. I kept going to the GP to ask for it to be removed but he kept saying give it three more months. It stopped and I've had nothing for years since (occasional pain if I wear jeans for too long). I had it for more severe issues than the light bleeding and dull ache it caused for those 9 months so was worth it in the end.

SandraTheBee · 24/02/2019 18:17

I thought it was settling down yesterday- then last night and this morning lots of fresh blood. Now there is absolutely nothing- very confusing.

mind you this is about the time my period would be due- so maybe it's that?

I have a friend who specialises in women's health as a physio, and her plan for menopause is a mirena coil with vaginal cream. She said the hormones in both are biologically equivalent to humans. Or something.

Anyway, I trust her judgement and will be following her plans when the time comes!

Janethevirgo · 24/02/2019 18:27

My mirena was hellish for the first 4 months or so, i had such high expectations of no bleeding at all so was disappointed with spotting etc but I’m so glad I persevered. I’m now a year into my second one and love it

SandraTheBee · 24/02/2019 18:51

4 months!
I'm not sure I can put up with it daily bleeding for that long for that long!.
I am using it for contraception only- although being 51 i probably don't need it anyway.
It's so not great- I have a new bloke and I'm making a bloody mess of his bedsheets.
He is really ace about it, doesn't care, but I bloody do- it's not exactly sexy is it.Angry

Glad I found this thread as I had one fitted about 3 weeks ago and I have had a bleed for 17 days now. It is getting lighter and I have had dull aches.

I am using it with Oestrogen to stop very heavy peri menopausal periods and as part of HRT.

I'll stick with it. I really need it to work.

SandraTheBee · 25/02/2019 15:53

I don't know what's going on.
Having thought I'd started my period yesterday the rather heavy bleeding has now completely stopped.
nada.
Here's me desperately hoping that my uterus has been emptied out finally.

Thanks Rosie39 for that explanation. I find it mind boggling that I get better info off the women on here than my private meno GP!!!!!!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 25/02/2019 17:15

I love mine - I'm on my third. I got my dates hopelessly wrong for the last one and had it in for 5 years + 6 months and have to say the final year I had the most terrible peri-menopausal symptoms - nothing physical, all mental, things like anxiety and confusion. Got my new coil and I was back to myself in a day. I had weight gain for #1 and #3 (not for #2 where everything was in date) which I hated but worth it to not have the other symptoms.

Chewbecca · 25/02/2019 17:18

I've had one for 6 weeks now... and have bled every day since. Sometimes just spotting, then a bigger bleed, then back to spotting again. I haven't had any time without a pad or liner since it was inserted.
Feeling a bit miffed about it but am going to persevere a bit longer as I have no other symptoms.

30birthdayholiday · 25/02/2019 19:15

Yes I am the same, I had spotting daily for 3 months, some days heavy enough to need a tampon and a panty liner, other days barely needed a panty liner, but still a few spots IYKWIM.
Now I have basically no period, couple days of spotting a month and that's it. Before I had it fired I was going through a super plus tampon in 2 hours and flooding pads as well. Liking it a lot so far.
