Worried about DD

DD (17) has over the past few months she has had multiple low level viruses , she has a part time job working with children so I assumed that’s where she was getting them from.
A few weeks ago her gums started to bleed really badly, she had fixed braces and I was hoping the issue would resolve when removed. When they were removed I was shocked at the amount of blood and clots that came out (DD2 also had her removed and bleed a little bit not nearly as much). DD was supposed to see a hygienist on Friday but I had to cancel due to her being unwell.
Last week her face became really puffy around her eyes and neck, the next day she had swollen glands. The day after (Saturday) she did a full day at work and was exhausted when she came home - she has pretty much been in bed since.

On Monday the GP sent DD to A&E as she needed urgent bloods due to puffy face (DS has a kidney condition so the Dr was being cautious).
Urine dipstick showed protein/blood/nitrites/leukocytes so she is being treated for a UTI even thought DD is adamant she doesn’t have one - no urgency/burning or tenderness.
Bloods showed raised white cells and she’s going to have all the tests repeated on Friday.

The dr suspected glandular fever but that test has come back negative but apparently you can have false negative tests.

I really feel like something isn’t right with DD. Her gums are bleeding, she’s getting awful night sweats, at the moment she can barely move as her whole body hurts, her face is still puffy. Even though she is exhausted she struggles to sleep for a decent length of time.

Apart from getting the contraceptive pill DD hasn’t been to the GP surgery for about 5 years and that was due to her hyper mobility, she has for a long time been very fit and healthy.

I am wondering what to ask the dr when we go back on Friday, assuming she’s not better by then.

Any ideas?

I truly hate to panic you, but if you type in those symptoms, Google comes up with leukemia.

I'd want to ask the doctor to rule leukemia out. After that, they can find the real cause.

Please come back to update us. x

lljkk that’s what I found when I googled too.

DD got up at 3 today and has managed to eat, she also looks less puffy although she does have a reply stuffy nose.
Am hoping it’s a virus and she’ll be better soon but something nasty like Leukemia is at the back of my mind.

I think I would mention leukaemia to the Dr. If only to put your mind at rest. I know if it were me I would just continue to worry until I knew it definitely wasn't.

Has she had a diabetes test?

It's possible that she is just unwell with a bad virus, has been brushing her teeth less as a result and that has caused the bleeding gums. Teenagers can sometimes have gums that bleeding very heavily, it can be do with hormones.

My other thought was cortisol levels because of the puffy face and that can also lead to tiredness and bleeding gums. Also maybe vit C deficiency? I think but c deficiency can lead to increased cortisol production therefore puffy face, tiredness, bleeding gums is a common sign? I'm not sure about the aches though.

I hope she is okay

We saw the Dr today and DD does have glandular fever, at least it explains her current symptoms.

That explains a lot! It's a long haul to get better, I'm sure you know.
