Vegetative State

Anyone know much about this? Had a family member in this state?

My mother in law vomitted and collapsed two weeks ago. They took her to the hospital and found out she had a leaking aneurysm. They operated on her two days later via the coiling method. The operation was successful and she was awake albeit abit worn out (major brain surgery so expected).

However after 24 hours, she became unconscious then two days later had a massive stroke. So she’s been unconscious for 11 days now.

She’s vegetative because her brain stem is still working, so can breathe on her own. But she won’t respond to any commands. She’s GS level 3 which is the lowest level of consciousness. In that time, she’s had low sodium levels, Pseudomonads infection and really high blood pressure (blood pressure was 245 at one point yesterday!). High blood pressure has been an ongoing issue.

Her stroke affected her front and right side of the brain and was quite significant the neurosurgeon said but because she’s unconscious, they can’t assess the damage.

She’s been having seizures so been sedated but they finally seem to have stopped so waiting to see if she’s going to wake up now in the next few days and maybe the sedation wasn’t allowing her to wake up...

What’s the outcome do you think? Do we wait for weeks or months to see if she wakes up?? Will she be okay?

Flowers sorry OP I have no experience or knowledge of this, just didn't want you to be worrying alone. I hope someone comes along who can give you some advice Brew

Hi OP, what a worrying situation. A friend of ours was in a car accident in 2016. They suffered a serious upper brain stem injury. They were in a vegetative for about a year, and are now in a minimally conscious state and have full-time around the clock carers. They have recovered more than what was initially expected, but cannot walk, or talk, or live any kind of independent life. I hope there is a better outcome for your MiL.
