Pillow recommendations for neck pain

HansSolo22 · 15/02/2019 12:02

I've suffered with neck / back pain for years, tried all the usual remedies, osteopath, magnesium, physio, etc. I was hoping for any recommendations for a good pillow as my ones are uncomfortable and I think this is part of the problem. Happy to pay more for a decent one! I'm a side sleeper if that makes a difference. Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

Can't help with the pillows but was told not to use more than one pillow as it puts your neck/spine out of line.

I was suffering with painful shoulders and feeling uncomfortable in bed with my regular two pillows. I ended up buying this one from dunelm and my neck and shoulder have been great, pretty much after a few days of using it.

I've had neck pain on and off over theyears. I used to sleep with two pillows - one firm and one soft on top, but switched to a memory foam one about a year ago (got a free Simba one when I ordered a mattress for my son's bed) and I'm finding it so much better. An online search suggests that Simba no longer sell the kind of pillow I have, but the Eve one looks very similar www.evesleep.co.uk/memory-foam-pillow

Meant to say that I am also a side sleeper

Thecreosotekid · 15/02/2019 12:25

Following with interest. I’ve just ditched my memory foam one as it’s like a brick and doesn’t appear to have much of a memory. Am now using one from John Lewis which is okayish but doesn’t give enough support. I have no idea what to try next and my neck, shoulders, upper back and top of my right arm are getting gradually more painful :(

allypally999 · 15/02/2019 12:56

I wish I had the answer - I've tried dozens of pillows. I did like the cool pillow from Dreams for a while (£50) but am back to a memory foam one from Asda at £10 (not entirely of foam as they are like concrete). Its ok but still looking for the perfect one. We have a pillow mountain of discarded ones in the attic

I'm a side sleeper and get nasty shoulder/neck if I'm not supported right. Broad shoulders too, probably half the problem.

I'm using one of these,
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000OOIAY0/?tag=mumsnetforum-21
and one of these
www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/textiles-rugs/pillows/r%C3%B6lleka-memory-foam-pillow-art-90269838/

They're slightly different heights and I chop and change between them. They're okay if you find yourself on your back too, they squish enough.

I have arthritis in my neck and suffered many years of neck pain. You are right about the importance of the pillow. I now have a very, very thin pillow. It's not particularly comfortable and I long to sink into a pile of lush pillows. But it has worked. I also do neck exercises every morning when I wake while lying flat.
I have virtually no neck pain now.

HansSolo22 · 15/02/2019 16:03

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. I'll check out the recommendations and hope that I find my perfect pillow! It is, very literally, a pain in the neck Smile

I'm a bit late to this but might as well chip in as I've had the same sort of issues (frozen shoulder, now mostly recovered, but ongoing neck/arm/shoulder pain).

This is the pillow two different physio/osteopaths recommended to me: royalrestpillows.co.uk/product/standard-royal-rest-pillow/

I have one and while I don't use it all the time, I do when I'm feeling particularly tense and it seems to sort my neck out. It's shaped at the edge and has two different heights to support your neck at the correct angle to your body - you just flip it round to the side you want (I'm also a side sleeper).

I found one online for about £50.

I’ve had neck pain for years and tried multiple pillows. What I use now and is the best so far is one fairly flat pillow and a feather pillow. The flat pillow on the bottom gives a bit of support and the then the feather pillow gives comfort.

wishingforalotterywin · 16/02/2019 23:04

Trouble with pillows is everyone's different and if you order online it's a pain to return them.

I was v impressed in a big Next store today that they had a good range of pillow types on display.

I use my memory foam brick for reading in bed on my side and then ditch it on the floor -otherwise I get a crick in the neck- and sleep on a well stuffed John Lewis feather pillow that moulds to my head

SleepingBooty · 16/02/2019 23:14

I'm a side sleeper so need a big pillow for support. The only one I've found that works for me is one with springs.

Rade · 17/02/2019 11:11

Interestingly since I posted above I had a shoulder problem.
So I ditched the thin pillow that had "cured" my neck pain and slept with a thick soft pillow that minimised squashed shoulder (side sleeper). It felt bliss and my shoulder is better but my neck now hurts..........

snugcity · 29/06/2019 19:24

I have this pillow

Sofasurfingsally · 29/06/2019 23:14

I think feather and down. I tried to change recently and bought several types , all decent quality, but back to feather it is.

kingstonmum17 · 05/12/2019 12:32

so funny you should mention this as I recently had exactly the same thought! A friend of mine told me about this pillow, I bought it and it did help a lot. (www.sleep-easy.store/products/easy-sleeper)

It's quite firm so it depends what you're looking for but the structure suits me and I did feel some relief (have struggled with neck pain for what seems like forever!). Sleep on it most nights now so would recommend.

But anyway I hope you find what you're looking for! Warm wishes Smile

GoldfishGirl · 05/12/2019 20:39

Another vote for Dunelm - the boxy ones that come in soft or firm versions. Not too expensive.

popcornpaws · 05/12/2019 23:30

Tempur for side sleepers, superb!
I take mine on holiday etc as i just can’t go back to anything else!
Fairly expensive but worth every single penny!!
