Glue Ear

My DD had a hospital appointment today and to cut a long story short it appears she has glue ear. Has been going on for a quite a while now and the ENT chap has said to go back in 3 months for another hearing test to see if things have improved. I doubt that they will tbh so he then mentioned grommets, hearing aid and you could have knocked me down with a feather!

So my question is...has your lo had it/got it and what treatment were they given? Would be grateful for your experiences.

DD is nearly 5 btw. Thanks xx

DS2 has been on regular review with glue ear for at elast 2 yers, supposedy 3 montly but more like 6 or 8.

The speicalist said that most kids see a recovery as they mature, around the age of 7 or so. Taht is what rhey wait for- only if that doesn't happen do they usually choose to intervene

My son had grommets and his adenoids out for glue ear at the age of 3 and half. It really improved his hearing, but unfortunately we had really nasty complications with the grommets. The fell out after 8 weeks and it took a further 9 months for the holes to close up. To make matters worst my son had a constant discharge from both ears and smelt like a dustbin.

However my son was very unlucky and what happened to him is VERY RARE. My son now has hearing aids which don't improve the hearing as much as grommets, but least we don't have constant ear infections.

dd (5) had it last winter but by March - with a run of mild weather and being cold free it had cleared.

My DD has just had her second lot of grommets in, we too were offered hearing aids at first but we didn't think she would tolerate them, now at 6 we hope that the combination of grommets, adenoidectomy and a huge growth spurt will do the trick, although only 6 yrs old she's in age8-9 clothes as she is very tall so not sure about the last one!

dd was having hearing checks from 2.5-3 and finally had grommits at Easter (nearly 5 then) the difference in her was amazing, she's come on at school in leaps and bounds etc. She would do okay in some hearing tests but failed 2 horrificly so that's why they went down the grommits route. Very glad it's happened her speech has caught up too and is no longer on the SEN list.

ds had glue ear and had grommets just before he started school, glue ear can be quite intermittent althguh by the time he was diagnosed he was almost totally deaf in one ear. grommets all went fine and he was a changed (for the better) boy and it helped at school with his behaviour. sometimes his grommets get blocked andhis hearing goes but it either comes back on its own or after a course of anti biotics, I couldn't recommend tham more highly in our case, and i do believe that complications are quie rare. poor you reallytired - like your name could be mine.

I had glue ear as a child, no probs to report at all and it sorted itself out when I was about 10 I think. I had grommets a number of times and adenoids out as well.
