Coeliac Disease

Last week I (48) was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. This was after having 4 weeks of diarrhoea as a symptom and then sent for all sorts of blood tests by the doctor. All tests came back negative apart from Coeliac Disease.

So since last Thursday I have been on a completely gluten free diet. However, I still have diarrhoea at least one a day. Is this normal?

It can take quite a few weeks for your symptoms to reduce when you go gluten free after diagnosis.

Also if you are new to a fully gluten free diet you might find that you are accidentally ingesting gluten in things you don't realise it might be in (e.g some soft drinks, walkers crisps etc) or you might be getting cross contaminated e.g. by using the same toaster that's used for normal bread.

Gluten is often added to food, even where you less expect it such as ham, sausage, salami, french fries, even some shredded cheese, roasted nuts, pickles, soy sauce ......

Going 100% gluten free is extremely challenging. It implies researching restaurants if eating out, cooking mostly at home with whole food during the transition time in which you learn about your condition and which food is safe for you to eat.
