Why is my bum itching? TMI, sorry

I get an itchy bum on and off in the evening. I understand about the symptoms of worms and I've not seen anything in my stools, nor have either of my young DC (one in nappies) had any symptoms, so have assumed it can't be worms. Also it's on and off - one night, then nothing for a while, then a few nights then nothing again. I assume worms would plague you until you treated them. I do have a recurring pile which can be itchy but weird it's in the evening only. Any ideas?

You lot are amazing, thanks. The DC swear they haven't had any itching and I haven't seen them scratching. I think it's just me.

Tomatoes - took me a long time to figure it out, after taking worm treatment. Try to avoid them now, including pasta sauces, pizza that have tomatoe sauce etc. But I take an antihistamine if I do get an itch and that works.

Most people have no symptoms so you still need to treat the whole family.

know this post is from last year but hoping someone can help me....
I’ve been feeling a tickling tingling, slightly itchy sensation around my vaginal area and sometimes around my anus for a few weeks. After lots of googling i decided it must be threadworms. I treated myself, husband and 4 & 6yo with ovex liquid followed the strict hygienic method. It has been 8 days now and no worms have been seen on any of us and no one has been itchy except me. I’m so worried and stressed I can’t sleep, eat or relax. I spend all my waking hours thinking about worms and feel like it has taken over my life as I find myself googling whilst at work! For the past two days I have been in tears and my children are noticing there is something wrong. I tried to make a doctors appointment but they cannot see me for two weeks! I’m so worried I now have an upset stomach and it is now burning when I go which I’m assuming is also from stress and strain as it is more diarrhoea like! I don’t think I can carry on like this for 2 more weeks! I know I’m being ridiculous but it truly feels like the end of the world. Surely if any of us had them I’d have found one by now? Could it be in my head that’s making me itch? I’m just so unsure! Sorry for the long rant but thought maybe you would have some answers.

You poor thing. Tell your GP surgery it's an emergency. 💐

LLWH · 23/02/2019 15:08

I intend on going to the surgery Monday and not leaving til they see me. I just need to know if we have them or not then I could cope xx

Rapide · 23/02/2019 15:19

Dh has had this for months, and it's not threadworms - been tested, has taken the treatment anyway and has since had a proctoscopy and colonoscopy which have confirmed it's not. Trouble is, no one can say what it IS. It's not even on the outside of the anus now either - a consultant dermatologist suggested some things to try (dabbing, not wiping, breaking the itch scratch cycle, special lotion for baths and showers, steroid creams etc) but nothing has really helped much. The itching and tingling now appears to be on the inside of the body, too.
We're now looking at it being some sort of nervous anxiety-type issue, as he's awake most nights in terrible discomfort and sometimes during the day now.

LLWH · 23/02/2019 20:29

Rapier I feel bad for your dh - I'm secretly hoping this isn't TW as the mental strain is taking its toll. I have suffered from severe ocd and anxiety in the past and use coping strategies these days. I must admit that I get itchy nose, ears and legs when I stressed and anxious and these new 'itches/movements' I'm feeling are 10x worse the more I think about it so maybe it is the same for your dh. SSRI's are the only thing that help when I'm feeling completely overwhelmed and then I have a good couple of years not needing them. Maybe mental health route would be good for him to discuss with the doctor? I imagine they'll want to put me back on that route tomorrow once I've seen the doctor....

currently we are all showered, washed bedding, duvets, pillows, steamed mattresses and floors and bedrooms have been wiped (yet again!) so I'm not itching nor feeling anxious as it's a clean space. Just the rest of the household touched surfaces to go.... SadAngry

Sorry that was to tag Rapide and autocorrect changed it!

LLWH · 25/02/2019 17:44

Well that was a waste of time 😭😭😭
Seen docs today - almost laughed at me! He won't look at the cello tape 'slides' I took in, won't do an anal swab and said to bring in a poo sample tomorrow when there's only a 5% chance of seeing any worms/eggs in them! Then he said to make an appt for 2 weeks time for a 'further chat'. I'm still extremely itchy at times - earlier it was so bad I wiped with a wipe and put it slightly inside my bum and a white/yellow thing was on the wipe but not sure if it was residual toilet paper as didn't seem to move and I rolled it in the wipe and it flattened out like wet toilet paper. I'm at a loss I could just sit and cry and cry 😭😭😭

For an itchy bum you may have piles or an anal fissure is it worse after a bowel movement or at night when your warm in bed. If your itching all over down below have you had a scented bubble bath tried a new soap or shower gel? If you have could you just wash with water no perfumes. I’m sure your pharmacy would be more helpful than your GP. Take care

I had this and ruled out worms. It was unbearable! I had to show my doctor which was awful. But she prescribed me canaston cream and it went within a couple of days. I was having a daily shower but infact that area needs washing more (sorry for tmi!)

LLWH · 25/02/2019 20:00

How did you rule out worms, from tests? I had a good look with a mirror (so glad dh or the boys didn't walk in at that point... squatting over a torch and mirror!) I can see that I have piles so maybe that is the cause. I called the doctors again and have an appointment with the nurse for 7th March for swabs of both passages so hopefully this will give me more answers. Just need to keep a lid on the crazy for now and resist the urge to clean the entire house too to bottom!

Aquilla · 25/02/2019 20:04

Don't forget to make sure everyone has an, eh, arse shower the next morning after treatment! Whilst washing all bedding on a hot wash.

PartyHatOnADog · 25/02/2019 20:08

I have this. I treated for worms once a week for about a month, accompanied by careful twice-daily washing (which made it worse) until I was diagnosed with genital and anal eczema. I use Eurax cream now.

LLWH · 26/02/2019 12:24

My 4yo was screaming and writhing with stomach pain last night... really driving me crazy now as I don't know if it's a new influx of worms or just the ovex working....
