Dental implants

Hi there
I was wondering if anyone who has any experience of dental implants could tell me a little about their experience. I've just lost a tooth that's fairly close to the front of my mouth and I'm really upset to be honest. I'm thinking about getting an implant but I'm quite nervous. Thanks in advance.

Ok well I don’t want to put you off but mine were extremely painful after the procedure. I had been warned that they were painful but when I asked for painkillers the dentist just repeated the same mantra “research has shown that ibroprofen and paracetamol are best for dental pain’
When I came round from the local anaesthetic I realised that this was very much not the case and I was in absolute agony.
My dh got some strong painkillers off our neighbour who is recovering from cancer and then I was alright.
It’s a major procedure as they cut through gum and jaw so of course it’s going to be painful but if you’ve got some good painkillers at home, or your dentist will give them to you then I’d say have them done as they look identical to the teeth they replaced.

I had the surgery for two implants a month ago, haven't had the replacement teeth done yet.

The extraction and insertion of the titanium rods was unpleasant but manageable. I didn't have any sedation. The procedure took about 40 minutes for 2 teeth.

There was very little pain afterwards. I was prescribed an antibiotic and a painkiller (ponstan)

I'm happy I decided to do it at last! I've spent ages worrying about the cost, the pain, being without my teeth etc. But they gave me a temporary clip thing to wear if I wanted to look as though I'd all my teeth and seeing how nice it looks I'm really happy I've done it.

I've had mine for 7 years now. It was quite an expensive and arduous process. I was off work for s but because I was a bit doolalley and couldn't talk properly. I remember the stitches in my mouth making it impossible to eat.

HOWEVER,
they changed my life. I can smile and talk and eat. Nobody would ever know and I also got veneers at the same time.

Over time they have stained a bit but I would do it again in a heartbeat. They are the best money I ever spent.

I've got three implants (well two with a double crown) and two are my front teeth.

I had 2 dental implants in December .
The whole appt was about 60 mins from start to finish. There was a lot of pushing etc but I felt no pain during the actual procedure.
It takes time for the area to heal as there is stitches and a lot of bruising . I found one implant to be far more painful than the other although all fine now.
It has been totally worth it though .
In hind sight I would not have chosen December to have them done as had to cancel lots of plans.

Thanks for the information everyone. I think I'm definitely going to take the plunge and get one fitted as I really can't live with the plate they have given me. I'm just a little nervous about the whole experience. Thanks again x

My ds1 needs dental implants at some point as he hasn't grown adult teeth. How expensive are they?

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 10/02/2019 19:12

Mice - no adult teeth? I know a fair bit about this! It should ve funded by the NHS as it is thousands.

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 10/02/2019 19:13

Is he in the system? There's a facebook group...

MiceSqueakCatsMeow · 10/02/2019 19:53

Braces and floating bridges are funded by the NHS. They don't put implants in until after the age of 18. That means we have to buy them. He didn't have growth plates to grow adult teeth. It's heredity, I have a missing tooth.

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 10/02/2019 20:00

Yep the reason for that is the jaw needs to be fully grown. They wont do implants in under 18s. One or two missing teeth is very common but higher numbers missing (as in our family) is quite uncommon. Have you looked up Ectodermal Dysplasia? I have had to have repeated treatment (including jaw surgery) and my daughter is awaiting another consultant appointment to look at her future but it really is a complex long term thing. All my (and my brothers) implants have been funded, it usually is for actual rare hereditary conditions. Ive had multiple operations as my jaw wasnt strong enough or developed enough for proper implants. Ive been told it will be for my daughter too.

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 10/02/2019 20:01

(Will be funded that is!)

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 10/02/2019 20:04

(Sorry OP bit of a derail as one or two implants is usually a common dental procedure!)

AvaTheGardener · 11/02/2019 12:20

I had an implant fitted last year to replace a broken root canal that couldn't be crowned because there wasn't enough original tooth left. It took several appointments over about five months - one to remove the root canal and fit the post with a temporary crown; another to check the post was settling in OK; another to fit the final crown; a final check-up. I had sedation for the post fitting, and painkillers, but it didn't hurt too much afterwards. There was some faffing around, keeping the temporary tooth clean and remembering not to chew on that side of my mouth, but nothing too arduous.

The whole thing cost £3k - it was expensive but the dentist was brilliant, it's completely undetectable, and I knew I'd have to fork out for a crown at some point, so I was braced for it.
