Pain relief after tonsillectomy

Hi all
New to this forum and had a tonsillectomy yesterday after years of waiting! I have one DD who is 7 and have got my mother to help out which is brilliant.
On the downside, I was sent away yesterday with run of the mill paracetomal and ibuprofen Calpol for kids! After hearing them say all day what a painful procedure it is 🤔 I'd say I have a fairly high pain threshold but if I can avoid suffering I will!
I asked before I left and the nurse said it was too late to get anytbing prescribed and i would have to go to my gp.
Has anyone any adult experiences in the uk could give me any advice on this. Online it appears, particularly in america that stronger pain relief is regularly prescribed and recommended.
Do you think i would be allowed to go to the gp as i know they say to avoid places that could be infectious.
Cheers guys
Bex

I remember having mine out when I was 24. It was such a painful recovery. I was also told to take paracetamol and ibuprofen but it didn’t work. I would definitely go to the GP and ask for stronger pain killer. The pain was so bad I still remember it. I ended up having to be readmitted to hospital after a couple of days as it became infectious. Then they gave me morphine!!

Chocspreadandpb · 11/02/2019 23:17

I phoned my GP for morphine and I couldn't have coped without it.

EstrellaDamn · 12/02/2019 22:00

I was given Tramadol and Naproxen I think, which was soluble.

I had to go back to the GP and ask for pills, drinking was far too painful.

During the night was especially hideous. The pain of waking up with a dry throat! Shock

To be honest the Tramadol barely touched it. Day 3 was awful, by Day 6 I was mostly ok again.

Thanks guys, i got some codeine which is doing absolutely nothing for the pain!! The day is not too bad but have just woken up in the night and id put the pain at a high 8/9 it was so intense! Jesus never thought it would be this bad. Ive taken more codeine than prescribed the last couple of days (only prescribed 15mg every 6 hours!). Im going to have to call my gp in the morning and maybe get a top up/something else? 🤷‍♀️
Im on day 5, in people's experiences when does it get easier??

I had oral morphine, tramadol and ibuprofen and paracetamol. I found pain manageable by day 10 but eased from agonising by day 7. Sip lots of water constantly as pp said dry throat kills! Take care Flowers

Pillowaddict · 13/02/2019 03:06

Oh also had dihydrocodeine-but make sure you also get lactulose as constipation nearly as bad!!!

Bexjx3 · 14/02/2019 01:45

Jesus pillowaddict what I'd give for all that right now!! I went back to the gp and got cocodamol and naproxen, and lets just say its useless right now as ive been woken up writhing in agony and maxed out both two hours ago! Seriously tempted to take more codeine. I never imagined the pain would be this bad it's incredible! I'm on night 6 so hopefully only one or more like this and im over the worst of it...
In the day it isnt too bad at all, just evenings and especially night time. Sorry to rant guys i just really need it right now!

Hey pillowaddict you mind me asking where you're based btw and when you had them out? Im just kind of shocked they only sent me away with paracetemol and calpol given how much pain ive been experiencing. And then on top of that I've paid out £30 almost in prescriptions because the second prescription was also completely inadequate (15mg codeine twice a day 😂) I know they're trying to move away from strong painkillers, but come on theres a time and a place!!

I had mine out about 4 years ago, it didn't really get any better until about day 11 or 12. And even then I was dependent on some kind of pain killers for several days more. It is miserable at the time, but worth it in the end.

I had soluble diclofenac, topped up with soluble paracetamol. It was the diclofenac that really helped, I can remember the misery when it wore off. Unfortunately diclofenac has been removed from allowable prescribing lists in many areas (possibly all by now) because of safety concerns. You may not be able to get it.

Does anyone know if its normal for it to bleed a bit? Im day 6 and spat out what looked like a smqll blood clot, the area had a patch of blood but has since stopped and never really full on bled. Im scared to eat or drink incase i make it worse, or is this just normal when the scabs staft coming off?

I never had any bleeding, but from what I understand I was unusually lucky. Keep an eye on it and call 111 if you're worried I guess? Sorry that's not overly helpful! I think complications are common but still scary with tonsillectomies.
