Variety of symptoms - thyroid?

OnNaturesCourse · 07/02/2019 09:45

Hair thinning
Dry skin
Insomnia (a little, but also related to my PTSD)
Worsened anxiety
Low mood
Little energy
Increased sweating, dramatically
Feeling warm
Achy joints
Lengthening menstrual cycles
Heavy and/or long periods.

Those are the main symptoms I've had for about a year now, and they have been steadily getting worse. Started when my LO was approx 6 months. I put it all down to hormones and things getting back to normal... But things aren't getting better. My cycles have gone from 28 day, regular aa clockwork, to 30-32 days and vary in length and volume. I'm currently on day 34 of this cycle and no signs so have made a doctors appointment.

I am 30.

I am paranoid it's early menopause, which is common in my family but normally around 35-40.

Another thing I've found to match my symptoms is thyroid problems?

Does anyone have thyroid troubles or have experienced early menopause that could hold my hand and speak to me?

I'm going to GP today but doubt I'll get results right away!

It could be your thyroid. Are you also exhausted? Forgetful? Not growing hair, losing the outer edges of your eyebrows? Weight gain/loss? The GP will want to do bloods, so you won't get a result straight away, but it should be only a few days. I have no experience of early menopause. Hope the GP can do something that might help today.

OnNaturesCourse · 07/02/2019 10:10

I'm tired no matter how I sleep but I put it down to broken sleep with the little one and partners snoring. Not noticed my eyebrows but my hair is super thin and I have no regrowth anymore plus the tiny 'baby' hairs round my hairline have gone. Get really dry, tired achy eyes too.

I've been. Had a swap taken and been told my cervix is swollen and red. I've to go back for bloods but it'll be a few weeks until the first appointment, and I'm getting sent for a scan. I'm now sitting here shitting myself.

Seriously needing a hand hold.

Cancer was mentioned, and I'm home alone now with my little one feeling so blue and worried. 8 weeks on tests and results, don't know how I'm going to cope.

Hey there :) I've had similar symptoms excluding the thinning hair and I had a hysterectomy at 27.

Didn't want you worrying alone.

I'm having investigations on my liver. Ultrasound is another 3 weeks away and this has been dragging on since last March/April now

OnNaturesCourse · 07/02/2019 16:27

Funky... If you don't mind answering, what the reason?

I've only got one little one, and we were undecided on more but now I'm definitely wanting more 😢

Hair can be low iron (ferritin) or vit d or b12 or thyroid. Post partum thyroiditis can sometimes happen so good to get that checked out.

Very much hope it's just hormones and readjustment post partum. I'm nearly 9 months pp and been having no end of issues with dry eyes, every virus causes pink eye or itching. Hypromellose is really helpful from pharmacist.

Have you been breastfeeding?

OnNaturesCourse · 07/02/2019 19:02

No. Formula fed.

Thanks for your reply.

FunkyBarnYardBroom · 07/02/2019 19:23

Oh don't worry probably not the same for you!

I only mentioned the hysterectomy as I wasn't getting longer periods. All my symptoms now are years after the hysterectomy. I'm mid 30s now.

FunkyBarnYardBroom · 07/02/2019 19:24

Sorry I should have worded my original post much better

As it happens I have low iron and low vitamin d levels so some of the symptoms could be that?

Hope your doctor comes back to you quickly. When is your next appointment?

OnNaturesCourse · 07/02/2019 19:27

Not for another three weeks... Going to drive me nuts!

I have similar symptoms. My periods have now stopped. I'm 47 but wasn't expecting to go through menopause till mid 50's like my mum. I was also told a couple of years ago I still had lots of eggs left so it's a bit strange. I have an underactive thyroid - which came on after my first child.

OnNaturesCourse · 07/02/2019 20:00

Very odd, it does tend to happen early in my family but nothing like this earky!

Yes all those symptoms for thyroid, before I was diagnosed the tiredness was horrendous, stairs I'd go up every day became mountains, and at night all of a sudden like a ton of bricks I'd be hit with an overwhelming need to sleep immediately where I was.

I was also generally itchy but when I scratched, lines would stay there for ages. I also suffer with PTSD, but not early menopause.

NeurotrashWarrior · 08/02/2019 07:18

Re reading your post it could be thyroid. Pp thyroiditis can go both ways (hyper and then swing hypo) or pregnancy can bring on autoimmune thyroid issues.

Both can affect periods but also periods can be different for some women anyway after pregnancy. Worth getting checked for a range of things though. I asked about bf for that reason.

That's a really long time for blood tests, is there no way it could be sooner?

OnNaturesCourse · 08/02/2019 15:18

Thanks for the replies.

Only getting them now.

Bloods, unfortunately the earliest appointment is the one I have... But I'm going to keep calling and see if any cancellations come up.

Does your local hospital have a blood test dept? At ours we can turn up and take a ticket to wait as long as the doctor has given the test notice to take along

hastingsmua1 · 08/02/2019 22:56

Definitely second checking if you can find a hospital (etc) that offers walk in blood tests. I have quite a few in my area - all you need is the blood test request form from your GP which the receptionist scan supply.

OnNaturesCourse · 08/02/2019 23:25

Do I need the GP note beforehand, like would I need to get it from them and then go to the hospital

OP posts:
OnNaturesCourse · 08/02/2019 23:35

Is this done in Scotland? Looked online but can't find any drop in clinics that aren't private.

OP posts:
hastingsmua1 · 08/02/2019 23:35

Yes.

You can call your GP’s receptionists beforehand and ask them to get the lab request form ready for you to collect if that helps.

hastingsmua1 · 08/02/2019 23:44

To be fair, it could be different in Scotland. Best thing would be to call your GP’s receptionist and see if there’s a nearby hospital or clinic that you can get your bloods taken. They’ll be able to let you know either way.

OnNaturesCourse · 08/02/2019 23:49

I'll give it a bash on Monday as I'll be calling to see if there's any cancellations anyway.

Such a worrying time and I'm so anxious.

Hope you manage to sort something! Not sure if this is useful: www.nhstayside.scot.nhs.uk/OurServicesA-Z/PhlebotomyServices/index.htm

OnNaturesCourse · 09/02/2019 00:02

Had a look and those hospitals are a good 2 hours away from me unfortunately but thank you. I've looked at private and I'm astonished at the prices.
