Where can I get reliable advice about natural remedies?

Is there an organisation which vouches for people who can advice on natural/herbal remedies?

I've started getting hot flushes and would like to try a herbal remedy but googling gives you scary side-effects and/or shouty advice/special offers/five star ratings written by who-knows-who with links to who-knows-what product.

Where can i get sensible, independent, knowledgeable and safe advice?

I can see the British Herbal Medicine Association online but it doesn't have a 'find a practitioner' or appear to have any registration or licensing for practitioners. It does have links which appear to be near to what I'm after but one doesn't work (National Institute of Medical Herbalists) so I'll try the other 'College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy' but it seems odd that it's so hard to track down and not more user friendly (or better known, this racket is worth billions!)

Or is this an indication that all herbal remedies are quackery do you think? If i wanted a chiropractor or a Yoga teacher or a Meditation teacher, I'd have no problem finding a registered practitioner - so why the problem with herbal remedies and supplements?
Or have I answered my own question and my choice is between GP for HRT or stoicism?
