Visit GP for a cold - symptoms worsen each year

I'm quite susceptible to a nasty cold during the winter and over the past 5 years they seem to be getting progressively worse each time. When the worst part of the cold has passed I end up with a lingering dry cough. The whole thing lasted 7 weeks last time.

This time I've had a particularly bad sore throat and lost my voice for a few days as well as the usual other symptoms. I'm 3 weeks in and still have a dry cough, sore throat and ear ache.

Should I be concerned/visit my GP? I know it's only a cold, but I end up avoiding outdoors activities/swimming for a couple of months.

What would you like the GP to do, exactly?

You and 80% of the population have a cold at this time of year, unless you are having trouble breathing please don't take up a valuable gp appointment, paracetamol and fluids is all they will tell you to take.

Thanks. I think it's a waste of time going to the GP. When I've checked colds online it suggests going GP after a couple weeks/ sore throat 10 days. I'm passed that and guess I'm more susceptible to colds and find them harder to shift. Going to stick with the paracetamol, TCP, ginger and lots of fluids. Other people have suggested that I get an appointment and expressed concern with persistent dry cough. This could be as family member who had a persistent dry cough was eventually diagnosed with lung cancer - I think this is at the back of their minds and they are worrying unnecessarily.
