I've just started doing some walking interspersed with jogging, ie walk a bit, then jog for a bit, then walk etc. This is so i can build up slowly. I am doing a set route that takes 20 minutes and then, when i start coming back 5 minutes earlier, then i'll extend the route. Ive done 4 days in the last week, but hope to go out most days.

Anyway, I've been doing this for only a week, and today my shins are REALLY painful. They feel bruised and achey. What on earth is it? Am I doing something wrong? I thought I was building up slowly by walking and jogging little bits. Help!!!!

stop for a few days, it sounds like shin splints (or is it splits?) i don't know medically whatit is only that you should rest for a few days and go slower than you have done

Get your running shoes and running style checked - this is available at some good running shoe stores/gums, sounds like shin splints to me.

Thank you. I probably could do with better running shoes.

VVV - what surface are you running on? If you're on the roads can you transfer to grass for a while? If you're on a treadmill try putting it on a slight incline.

IME it is mainly solved by a combination of change of shoes and an adjustment in your running action. Try not to overstretch, landing on a fully extended leg, you need to think about placing your foot more flat.

road/pavement.

Not much in the way of grass on my doorstep
